Sener Aerospace locates a pioneering laboratory in Europe in Cerdanyola

The Basque group Sener's company invests more than five million in new spaces that will allow the production and testing of space systems and equipment, produced for both ESA or NASA and for the new actors of New Space

Beyond the intrigue it generates, space is one of the economic areas with the most development potential in the coming years, especially now that its access door has opened to smaller players, through the production of small satellites that orbit at low altitude. Sener Aeroespacial, a company of the Basque engineering and technology group Sener, has invested more than five million euros in its facilities in Cerdanyola del Vallès to continue positioning itself in the new space economy or New Space, where it has already participated since the acquisition for 70 million euros three years ago of Tryo Aerospace & Electronics, one of the main companies in this growing sector.

This investment will also serve Sener Aeroespacial's traditional business line, the scientific one, which produces space systems and equipment for the European Space Agency (ESA) or NASA. It will be possible to address both the production and integration of the parts of these products and the testing to see if they function optimally in a single area, making the Cerdanyola facilities one of the most pioneering in Spain and Europe.

The new spaces consist of 1,000 square meters of clean room with controlled conditions and continuous monitoring of temperature, humidity, and particles, as required to develop products that then have to fly into space. Located in Sener's offices in Cerdanyola, the new laboratory is divided into 750 square meters for automated manufacturing, assembly benches for equipment integration and equipment for functional and environmental tests, and 250 square meters for the production of hybrid microwave circuits.

Currently, about 40 employees work there, dedicated to projects for ESA such as Meteosat Third Generation, Metop Second Generation, and Biomass. They are also developing projects for the commercial market, with equipment for Spainsat Next Generation and the OneSat platform. It is planned to expand this workforce with ten more people in the coming months, reaching a total of 50.

Sener Aerospace is also present in Madrid, its most important headquarters, Bilbao and Poland. Likewise, other business lines of the Basque group are also located in Sener's offices in Cerdanyola, such as infrastructure and energy engineering, beyond aerospace. In total, there are about 300 workers from different disciplines, including engineers, mathematicians, physicists and architects.
