Saba enters Geever's capital to strengthen itself in last mile

The Barcelona company reaffirms at its general shareholders' meeting its commitment to turning car parks into a key piece of home delivery of goods

The inhabitants of a city change over time how they move through its streets, but also how they consume, evolving the uses given to each space. The possible new uses that car parks can have are an example. With the rise of e-commerce, their location in urban centers and their capillarity can allow for more efficient and sustainable distribution, facilitating the entry of goods at night and scheduling their departure during the day with more sustainable vehicles than vans, such as bicycles.

To advance towards this scenario, Saba ---owned by CriteriaCaixa--- began collaborating two years ago with Geever, an operator specialized in last-mile distribution, enabling five car parks in Barcelona as warehouses for deliveries. Beyond reducing road congestion and pollution, this has allowed an end to absurd logistics, that is, deliveries that do not reach their destination because no one is found to collect them or for many other reasons, reducing them by up to half. These fruitless trips represent 15% of total deliveries and, in Barcelona and Madrid alone, reach up to nine million.

Given the results obtained in the pilot test, the car park manager chaired by Salvador Alemany has decided to go a step further, reaching an agreement in principle with the logistics company Districenter to enter Geever's shareholding. Likewise, it is expected that the operator will be able to expand the number of car parks available in the Catalan capital for this use to nine.

Alemany, accompanied by Saba's CEO, Josep Martínez Vila, announced this operation during the ordinary general meeting of shareholders. It will be finalized in the coming weeks.

Saba's entry into Geever's shareholding allows for the continuity of the new uses it has been giving to car parks for some time, offering spaces to park shared mobility vehicles or bikes and spaces to charge electric cars. In the field of e-commerce, it has also enabled lockers for package collection, with an offer of 40 lockers in car parks in Spain, the United Kingdom, and Italy.
