A month after its entry into service, Diagonal is already getting used to seeing the tram pass between Verdaguer and Glòries, and its launch has set a historical record for validations in the Trambesòs. The new section of tracks has meant an increase of 38.3% in validations compared to the same dates last year, exceeding 1.14 million between the service starting on November 10 and December 8.

The opening of the three new stations of Monumental, Sicília, and Verdaguer has led to a 32% increase in the Trambesòs network on weekdays, which have risen from an average of 33,224 users to 43,935. On weekends, growth has soared more sharply. It has done so with a 55% increase, reaching 38,385 validations on Saturdays, and 27,127 on Sundays, in an expansion of the network that connects the tram with four metro lines and 13 bus lines.

However, the busiest day during this month was Friday, November 29, with 46,976 validations. And this figure has not been the highest only since the launch of the expansion, but it represents another historical record for service use considering both Trambesòs and Trambaix, with 147,215 validations.

And the increase in passengers has also occurred in the Trambaix compared to last year. As a whole, the two Barcelona tram networks have increased trips by 16.7% compared to the same period in 2023, going from a total of 2.74 million validations to 3.2 million.

This increase in trips derived from the extension of the network is part of an expansion that does not end here. The arrival of the tram in Verdaguer will be reinforced with new convoys to complete the Trambesòs fleet, which will begin to be delivered in early 2025. Then, it will be the turn of the rest of Diagonal and the connection of the two networks, a final step that will cost 200 million euros.
