Sofa, blanket, and theater from Teatre Lliure. This week, the third season of La plaça was announced, an audiovisual project co-produced with CaixaForum+ and directed by Elsabeth Produccions, which showcases the creative process of the most relevant directors in its program. In addition, the premiere comes with exceptional news: to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Teatre Lliure, the institution is opening all chapters of the series on its official website for the first time and only for this season.

The big novelty of this season has a name: Brazilian playwright and director Christiane Jatahy. The first chapter delves into the rehearsal room of Júlia – 15 anys més tard, a production currently showing at the Lliure de Gràcia venue. In this episode, the Brazilian creator holds a conversation with actress, playwright, and director Sílvia Ferrando to explain her way of understanding the performing arts.

The chapter shows her constant interplay between theatrical and cinematographic language that never loses sight of the political and social reality of the moment. Viewers will discover how the director builds dramatic tension, how she works with the performers, and how she approaches the staging the night before the premiere.

A gift for the Lliure's 50th anniversary

For three seasons now, La plaça has become an audiovisual space for reflection where viewers can learn about the theatrical profession firsthand. Each chapter is created from a conversation between the play's director and a prominent personality from the world of art, culture, or thought. This talk is complemented by behind-the-scenes coverage of rehearsals and the recording of the nerves and excitement on opening night.

This year, the celebration of Teatre Lliure's 50th anniversary offers the opportunity to revisit this documentary archive. Throughout this season, viewers can enjoy masterful encounters such as that of Andrea Jiménez who, before premiering Contra Antígona, meets with Roger Bernat to share different ways of understanding the theatrical act and to share the fragility involved in having to conclude a creative process.

You can also enjoy the meeting between Nao Albet, Marcel Borràs, and Miquel Missé. The creative duo discusses with the sociologist the concepts of violence and the mythical construction of the hero figure while working on the staging of Els Estunmen, their first opera.

Another essential conversation from La plaça is the one starring Clara Segura and Julio Manrique. After having premiered El barquer and Una festa a Roma, the two artists talk about the transition from interpreter to director, their beginnings in the sector, and theatre understood as a way of life.

Àlex Rigola and Milena Busquets are also protagonists of these encounters. The day the team of El Mestre i Margarita entered the final phase of rehearsals, Rigola met with the writer to talk about his return to large format and the task of adapting Bulgakov's monumental novel.

From the first season of the documentary series, there are key chapters such as the meeting between La Calòrica and Queco Novell. Israel Solà and Joan Yago talk with the journalist on the occasion of the premiere of La brama del cérvol at Sala Fabià Puigserver, where they review the 15 years of a company that has revolutionized Catalan theatre.

Clàudia Cedó, Marc Buxaderas, and Andrea Gumes star in a conversation about Fantàstic Ramon on the challenges and opportunities of bringing functional diversity to the professional stage. Also, Marta Pazos and Anna Guitart meet in Plaça de Joan Coromines to analyze their collaboration with the Comedia Nacional de Montevideo in Lorca's El público.
