Petit Nicu, the brand to dress premature babies fashionably

The incipient firm produces garments for newborns in size 00, with ecological knitted organic cotton fabrics that, shunning white and plain colors, provide colorful prints

Petit Nicu is the brand of newborn clothing, created by Davinia Prieto, which is launched on the market with a very specific purpose: to cover the scarcity of supply of clothing to dress premature babies, that fits their size and does not deprive them of being fashionable.

With the claim "size 00 also exists", "and even size 000", defends Prieto, Petit Nicu designs, produces and markets, through online sales, nursing towels, hats and pants. And it plans to expand the range with the manufacture of bodysuits.

All garments are made with ecological jersey knit fabrics, 100% cotton, but with striking fabrics. The aim is to move away from the scarce basic clothing sold for premature newborns and that is only found in white or basic colors, usually pastel shades.

Davinia Prieto, an administrative assistant from Sant Vicenç dels Horts, has made a virtue of necessity. With the premature birth of her second son, Joel, she faced a complex situation and, in addition, discovered the collateral problems of having to care for a premature newborn. One of those setbacks, perhaps more trivial but important for a mother, was the difficulty in finding clothes of the right size for Joel that were also striking, fun, cute... "that he could be fashionable". "It demoralized me to see that I couldn't go to stores to buy clothes and find garments that fit me and that I liked, as I had done with his older sister," she explains.

Thus was born Petit Nicu, a project by this young entrepreneur, in which she is accompanied by Gemma Soriano, "a good friend" who has developed part of her professional career in the world of fashion and marketing, and who has configured the website and manages social networks.

Both have been working for more than a year on their initiative which, through the website, has already registered the first users, "from Murcia, Madrid, La Coruña...", because for now "we work on order". This allows them to make short series and not accumulate stock.

Davinia Prieto and Gemma Soriano have spared no effort to launch the brand, to which they have dedicated most of the months of confinement due to the 2020 and 2021 pandemic, to launch Petit Nicu last December.

On one hand, Davinia Prieto took a distance learning course in cutting and sewing with Qstura, a design, pattern making, and sewing school in Girona."They have helped me a lot in the design of the patterns and the choice of fabrics, a complex issue because babies, and especially premature babies, have very delicate skin", she comments. Currently, she works with two local suppliers: Stracciatelas, from Sant Feliu de Llobregat, and Telas Molonas, from Girona.

With her brand, but especially with her initiative, Davinia Prieto also wants to contribute to giving visibility to prematurity, "so that it doesn't remain just a reminder every November 17, International Prematurity Day." Data shows that every year 10% of births in Spain, about 30,000 cases, are babies born before the 37th week of gestation, and of these, close to 2% are born before the 32nd week.
