With the aim of achieving a more sustainable energy mix, Naturgy is immersed in the construction of some thirty wind farms and photovoltaic plants that will represent the incorporation of 683 MW of new power in the coming months and that will add to the more than 5.3 GW already in operation. This new renewable generation capacity will generate close to 1,600 GWh/year of electricity, equivalent to the consumption of more than 450,000 homes.
The investment to launch the thirty new renewable generation facilities amounts to 528 million euros, and it is expected that a dozen will come into operation before the end of the year, with 228 MW. The new plants are mainly located in Extremadura (310.3 MW), Andalusia (150 MW), and the Canary Islands (71.9 MW). The rest are located in Catalonia (49.4 MW), Galicia (46.2 MW), Murcia (34 MW), and Castilla-La Mancha (21.7 MW).
Extremadura is the autonomous community that concentrates the most new renewable projects for Naturgy in Spain. In fact, recently, its first photovoltaic plant in the region, located in the municipality of Castuera, has been put into service. The facility has a power of 22 MWp and an estimated annual production of 47 GWh, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 13,500 homes. This new infrastructure, made up of more than 41,000 modules, is estimated to have a useful life of 25 years. The multinational has also begun the construction of a photovoltaic plant between the municipalities of La Albuera and Badajoz. The facility has a power of 50 MW and will produce approximately 122.9 GWh/year of energy, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 35,200 homes.
In the following positions of investment in renewables are Andalusia and the Canary Islands. In the islands, Naturgy is developing a wind farm that will have a total power of 9.2 MW and will involve an investment of more than 10.5 million euros. It is expected to produce 27.5 GWh of energy per year, which is equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of 7,800 homes.
Beyond the first three positions, there are other communities such as Castilla y León, Galicia, Murcia, and Castilla-La Mancha. In Castilla y León, Naturgy has launched two wind farms this 2022, one of them being the company's second in Castromonte (Valladolid). With an installed capacity of 35.20 MW, the project has involved an investment of more than 39 million euros. The infrastructure is composed of 16 wind turbines and the annual energy production is expected to be around 101.5 GWh per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 29,100 homes.
Likewise, in Galicia, the energy company plans to start the construction of a new park in the province of Lugo, with an installed capacity of 46.2 MW, and, in Murcia, a new photovoltaic energy plant with a capacity to produce 34 MW will be installed, which will be located in the town of Jumilla. Finally, another of the plants that will begin to operate is in Castilla-La Mancha. This facility has 41,006 modules and a power of 21.98 MWp. It will produce around 47 GWh per year, equivalent to the annual electricity consumption of more than 13,400 homes.
The multinational will invest 14,000 million euros between now and 2025, of which approximately two thirds will be dedicated to boosting renewable generationThe new facilities have to contribute to achieving emissions neutrality by 2050 and an installed capacity of renewable sources close to 60% by 2025.The multinational energy company plans to invest 14 billion euros by 2025, of which approximately two-thirds will be dedicated to boosting renewable generation, to reach the more than 14 GW expected to be operational by the end of 2025.
Likewise, the company continues with its policy of increasing emission-free production, with a 9.3% increase in 2021. It has also significantly reduced Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions, 12.9% less than in 2020, as a consequence of the new installed renewable capacity and the closure of coal-fired generation plants.
