The new season begins in Barcelona and, with it, the premiere of new musicals. In the theaters of our city, we will be able to enjoy great productions such as Mamma Mia!, Blood Brothers or the musical of Annie, but also local proposals in venues such as Versus Glòries, El Maldà or Sala Beckett (which, by the way, premieres its first musical production alongside Sergi Belbel).
During the coming months, we will witness great musicals in Barcelona that come preceded by great international success, as well as local productions with some of the most prominent Catalan names in the sector, such as Daniel Anglès, Jumon Erra or Àngel Llàcer.
The new musical season in Barcelona
The new theatrical season will raise the curtain with an essential event for Catalan theater. Between September 3 and 6, the Teatre Coliseum will host four unique performances of Cop de Rock, the production that Dagoll Dagom turned into a phenomenon in 2011. The company La Barca leads this production that preserves part of the original set design to tell us a story about second chances and youth lived in the 90s. All this, with the musical repertoire of Catalan rock with great songs by Sau, Els Pets, Sopa de Cabra and Lax'n'Busto.
The Teatre Apolo will host from September 17 to 27 the production of The Sound of Music produced by Theatre Properties, a musical set in the Austrian Alps that revives the relevance of the classic by Rodgers & Hammerstein. A few days later, on September 26, the Teatre Tívoli will become the stage for the return of Mamma Mia!, the comedy based on ABBA's songs and which, this time, arrives under the direction of Juan Carlos Fisher.
In addition to these major premieres, local venues also host some of the most anticipated musical premieres of the beginning of the season. This is the case of Espai Texas, which will begin on September 22 with performances of Després de nosaltres, a piece written and directed by Jumon Erra with a score by Miquel Tejada. Performed by Júlia Jové and Xavi Navarro with the piano accompaniment of Andrea Mir, the work tries to explain how two people rebuild themselves after ending their romantic relationship. In the same venue we will be able to see the revival of Autónomos, el musical, a satire by Álex Martínez Vidal and Andreu Rami that already has ten seasons parodying the life of a self-employed worker.
Contemporary creation and the investigation of new languages will also have a place in the Teatre Lliure de Gràcia. From September 23 to October 18, Miquel Mas Fiol will direct Tot fent 'La bella Helena', a neovarieté proposal in which the young company satirizes the secrets of the profession while trying to bring back to the stage the work that the Lliure itself presented in the late seventies.
For its part, the Sala Versus Glòries will host from September 30 to November 1 Un refugi al sol, a text by the Cia. Gèminis that intertwines the flight to the mountains of a musician during the Civil War based on Pere Belart's Soldier's Diary with contemporary queer identity and visibility stories.
From October 19 to December 14, the Teatre Condal will present Ella era Anita, a musical about the legendary Broadway performer Chita Rivera, conceived and starring Ester Bartomeu. The production, directed by Gara Roda and supported by a technical and musical team composed entirely of women, pays homage to the artist, claiming how her great successes helped pave the way for women creators in musical theater.
Between November 15 and January 24, the Teatre Poliorama will premiere the musical Gaudí: el despertar del geni. The work takes advantage of the commemoration of the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death to explain his childhood and the architect's relationship with nature. All this, through a score that fuses pop-rock with classical music arrangements and traditional sounds.
The large-format program will add another key event starting on November 26 at the Teatre Apolo with Los chicos del coro. Directed by Juan Luis Iborra, this adaptation of Christophe Barratier's film highlights the capacity of music and education to change the lives of a group of young people living in a difficult neighborhood.
The winter musical season
The month of December will mark a key moment for author's theater with the premiere of El forat blanc at the Sala Beckett. Scheduled from December 2 to January 17, the production is the first original musical theater production of the Poblenou venue. With dramaturgy by Sergi Belbel and score by Òscar Roig, the work portrays the last days of a prestigious artist who decides to hasten the end of her terminal illness.
For the Christmas holidays, Barcelona's theaters will bring back some musicals that have been authentic successes in past editions. For example, the Paral·lel 62 venue will feature from December 4 to 8 the return of The Little Prince, the show by Àngel Llàcer, Manu Guix, and La Perla 29 that revives this classic tale, with an immersive and very striking staging. Simultaneously, the Teatre Goya will offer again from December 23 to January 10 the adaptation of The Invisible String, Míriam Tirado's story directed by Alícia Serrat about maintaining emotional bonds.
The Sala Versus Glòries will host from December 17 to January 10 You, me... and you all... and the songs..., where Daniel Anglès and Pilar Capellades review three decades of their career linked to the company El musical més petit, accompanied on the piano by Sergi Cuenca. And, after the great success achieved at Grec 2026, the Teatre Romea will once again program the version of The Picture of Dorian Gray, a show by playwright Marc Rosich with a score by Jordi Cornudella, in which actress Àngels Gonyalons takes on the challenge of interpreting all the characters from Oscar Wilde's classic.
Musicals coming in 2027
The start of 2027 will maintain the pace with highly acclaimed productions. The Teatre Condal will host from February 12 to March 14 the revival of Blood Brothers, Willy Russell's text directed on this occasion by Daniel Anglès, which tells of the tragic fate of two twin brothers separated in their childhood. A few days later, from February 24 to March 21, the Sala Beckett will host the arrival of the Col·lectiu Pedant a Missa i Repicant with Urinary Angels, a black comedy characterized by absurdity and irony set in the subsoils of the capital.
The final stretch of the season will be reserved for May 2027 at the Teatre Apolo, a stage that will premiere two pieces from the New York scene. On the one hand, we will be able to see the musical Annie, a story that takes us back to the 1930s to show the determination and joy of its young protagonist in the historical context of the Great Depression.
On the other hand, the musical Jekyll & Hyde will delve into 19th-century Victorian London with a proposal wrapped in a gothic atmosphere of intrigue and mystery. Based on Robert Louis Stevenson's novel, the musical features meticulous set design, lighting design, and period costumes to talk about the internal conflict between reason and instinct. Good and evil shake hands through the split between the noble Dr. Jekyll and his sinister alter ego, Mr. Hyde.
This new season, Barcelona will be filled with musicals for all tastes: large-format shows, intimate shows, romantic stories, comedies, dramas, or even gothic horror. Let's fill the theaters!
