The municipal markets of Barcelona are celebrating this weekend the Mercat de Mercats event, an occasion to get closer to the public and highlight their role as providers of quality, sustainable, and local fresh produce, linked to healthy eating and the Mediterranean diet.

After two years of absence due to covid-19, the festival will take place until Sunday, October 24, with a series of activities, which will coincide with Barcelona's program as the World Capital of Sustainable Food.

As a novelty, the fair moves from Plaça de la Catedral to Plaça de les Glòries, next to the Disseny Hub, where representative stalls from the city's different markets will offer their best fresh products, such as fruits and vegetables, legumes, specialties, charcuterie, cod, olives, salted fish, fish, and meats. In the latter case, the Gremi de la Carn, to facilitate sales and consumption, will set up a point with barbecues ready to cook meat instantly and, on Sunday at 7:30 p.m., will give the talk Carn i Salut.

There will also be space for non-food markets, with stands where they will showcase their specialties, with the planned participation of Mercat de la Concepció, with Flores Navarro; Mercat dels Encants and Barcelona Fira Bellcaire.

As for the activities of gastronomy, one can enjoy the creations of city chefs, buy products from national producers, and share knowledge with product, gastronomy, health, and food sustainability experts in the Aula space. With the collaboration of the city's restaurants, in the stands one can taste tapas, one for 3 euros and another for 5 euros. There will also be the option to buy two types of menu, for 10 euros.

Territory wines will also be represented in the Wine Cellar, where wines from the main D.O.s of the country can be tasted. All have something in common: an approach to the world of gastronomy aligned with the core concept of this edition, sustainable food.

Workshops, talks and 'showcooking'

Mercat de Mercats 2021, an event organized by the Barcelona City Council, Mercats de Barcelona and Van Van, will feature a series of workshops, talks and showcookings ---with chef Rafuel or Chloe Sucreé--- aimed at all audiences. From the presentation of the book Temps de Mercat, written by Carme Gasull and edited by the IMMB and the City Council's Editorial Services, to the talk by the Espigoladors association, which will address the concepts of food loss and waste and will present practical ideas to incorporate into our daily lives concrete formulas for making a cuisine of aprovechamiento and seasonal cooking.

There will be time for debate with a series of round tables. Among them, Natural wines and biodynamic agriculture, with Rubén Parera and Oscar Navas; or Asian gastronomy with local products, with Humbert and MA! Condiments.

As in previous editions, Mercat de Mercats is also designed for the little ones. This year, children aged 0 to 8 will find all kinds of games and activities related to the world of produce and markets, and will be able to cook and learn to cultivate their own urban garden.
