The supermarket chain Mercadona has delivered a total of 4,804 shopping cards, each valued at 50 euros, to the Banc dels Aliments de Barcelona. The donation was made possible thanks to monetary contributions from customers, referred to as jefes (bosses) by the Valencian company, at the checkout line during last year's Gran Recapte campaign. The company participated with its 250 stores in Catalonia, 174 of which are in the Barcelona region.

"This influx of food is very welcome at a time when we are struggling to meet the high demand," states the president of the Banc dels Aliments de Barcelona, Lluís Fatjó-Vilas. "We greatly appreciate this type of donation in which chains like Mercadona collaborate to make these very important entries of food products into the Banc dels Aliments a reality," he remarks.

The more than 4,800 shopping cards, which will be distributed among the beneficiary entities of the Banc dels Aliments so they can acquire the products they need, have been complemented by an additional 10% contribution from Mercadona. The extra donation has translated into 24,570 kilos of pasta, specifically macaroni, which have been delivered directly to the Banc dels Aliments.

"It is a source of pride to be able to collaborate by providing our IT and logistical resources, while also thanking the solidarity of our jefes, since without them it would not be possible," says the Director of External Relations for Mercadona in Catalonia, Bernat Morales.

From the company, they encourage customers to continue collaborating in future fundraising campaigns through monetary donations at the checkouts, considered "the most efficient way and with which we best respond to the real needs of the final beneficiary."

More than 25,100 tons delivered in 2022 in Spain and Portugal

This set of actions is part of Mercadona's social responsibility plan, based on "sharing part of everything it receives" and executed through different sustainable lines of action that reinforce its commitment to shared growth.

The supermarket chain collaborates with more than 550 soup kitchens and 60 food banks in Spain and Portugal, to which it donates food daily, and participates in the food collection campaigns organized by these entities. In 2022, the company delivered a total of 25,100 tons of basic necessities, 22% more than in 2021.

In Catalonia, it collaborates with 157 social entities and charitable organizations, such as, for example, the four food banks of Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona and Lleida and their collaborating entities, the Red Cross and the Banc de Productes no Alimentaris La Nau. In 2022, it delivered 4,779 tons of basic necessities to Catalan entities. Of the total, 103 correspond to the regions of Barcelona; 24, to those of Tarragona; 21, to those of Girona and 9, to those of Lleida.
