The vice president and minister of Economy, Pere Aragonès, the minister of Education, Josep Bargalló, the president of Mercabarna, Montserrat Ballarín, and the director of the wholesale market, Jordi Valls, have presented the facilities within the Mercabarna complex where the Barcelona Food Institute will be located, which will open in the 2021-2022 academic year.
Mercabarna and the Education Consortium are working together on the creation of this new center, which will be located in several spaces ceded by Mercabarna and which, in total, will exceed 600 m2 of surface area. The estimated budget to be allocated to conditioning the spaces is 200,000 euros, and will be financed by the Department of Education.
The institute will have 27 teachers and a total of 375 Vocational Training (FP) students are expected, plus the 225 FP students for employment that Mercabarna's training center currently has. There will be the possibility of signing agreements for training in workplaces and also of carrying out dual training. Another objective is to promote research and development projects through the R&D programs of the companies operating in the complex.
On the other hand, Mercabarna has made a commitment to become a sustainable food hub, an aspect that will be present in the center's training proposal. Synergies will be established, for example, with the companies and producers present in the Biomarket, the first wholesale market for organic food in Europe, which came into service last December. The creation of this institute is also part of the fact that Barcelona is the Capital of Sustainable Food during 2021 and will host events and initiatives related to the sector.
