THE INTERVIEW

Inma Puig: "We only remember what moves us"

The psychologist who worked for more than a decade at Barça or El Celler de Can Roca defends that the emotional revolution is the only one in which everyone wins and reminds us that the past belonged to the strong (physically), but the future belongs to the sensitive

november 19, 2023 - 22:06

Inma Puig is a clinical psychologist and works as a business consultant. She studied teaching and started working in a school. She then internalized the importance of three major milestones: walking, writing, and reading, and riding a bicycle. Very soon she became interested in psychology and the world of sports where she had also competed as a tennis player.

She learned for 1,600 hours with Dr. Mario. Mario Jaite. Almost like Miguel Delibes' book. She also trained in economics and now does training, research, and development of high-performance teams. She was a psychologist for Barça for 15 years and was also the first psychologist for a restaurant full of Michelin stars: El Celler de Can Roca. There she distilled emotions and cooked feelings at low temperature. She likes the cause more than the symptom.

She is the author of three books: Retratos de Familia, todo lo que siempre quiso saber sobre la empresa familiar y nunca se atrevió a preguntar (Family Portraits, everything you always wanted to know about family business and never dared to ask) (Urano), Tras las viñas. Un viaje al alma de los vinos (Behind the Vines. A journey into the soul of wines) (Penguin Random House) and La Revolución emocional (The Emotional Revolution) (Conecta). Sustainability and emotional revolution are hers. Zero-kilometer and proximity feelings.

--- Why did you study teaching?I never would have imagined dedicating myself to psychology. I studied teaching and worked for eight years in a school with six-year-old children whom I taught to read and write. A key milestone in people's lives.--- To read and write.To know or not to know. I discovered the look of happiness of a child who begins to put letters together and already forms their first meaningful words. I understood the look of someone who discovers something new. There is another important milestone: starting to walk and wander autonomously. Then comes reading and writing, and also riding a bicycle.--- Grow and pedal.Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. "There are three important milestones: walking, reading and writing, and riding a bicycle"
--- Why did you study psychology?The teaching subject I liked the most was psychology, and I decided to pursue a degree in psychology to broaden my knowledge and be better at my job as a teacher. Then I spent two years in child and adolescent psychiatry at Sant Joan de Déu. I learned the trade.--- The art of learning and having a trade. I was a competitive tennis player and started having athletes in my practice. They told me there were players who weren't performing at their best because they struggled to concentrate or had anxiety. There's a key moment in my life when I met Dr.Mario Jaitewho taught me to be, think, and work as a therapist. He was my teacher. On Instagram, I often upload a quote of his after 1,600 hours with Mario.--- Almost like in the book Five Hours with Mario, by Miguel Delibes.Exact. It's a play on words. Imma Puig psicòloga

--- Shortly after, he ventured into business consulting.Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---I studied management and direction of small and medium-sized businesses at Esade. Economics or marketing are very necessary in life. I have been teaching at Esade for 20 years on group dynamics and analysis of people's behavior. 20 years ago, nobody talked about psychological harassment, expatriates, emotional management in family businesses, or change management from a psychological perspective. --- She was a psychologist for FC Barcelona from 2003 to 2018.In the time of theDream TeamofJohan Cruyffthere was a player who came to work with me on his personal and professional problems. Dr. Borrell was the head of medical services and said that psychology was key because many injuries do not have a physical origin.--- From physical health to mental health, and vice versa.It was the fear of not being able to meet the expectations of others. Then they enteredJoan Laporta and Sandro Rosellwith its new board and Dr. Monés was very clear that psychology had to be implemented at Barça. Once I was asked if it made sense for there to be a psychologist at the football club…
"People usually hide a problem like that, but Andrés Iniesta told me a phrase that I remember very well: 'Many believe that to have depression you have to have a problem with work, money, health or relationships, but I had everything and I felt very bad'"
--- And what did he answer?If we take into account that a soccer team is a team of people that is trained by astaffof people led by a board of people and followed by a group of fans... They are all people. So we started working with the coaches who are the weakest link in the chain when the team doesn't work. We work withFrank Rijkaard and withXavi Pascual, while implementing values at La Masia.--- ¿Algún momento inolvidable?Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---Attending to and caring for the parents of young people is wonderful. When the club wants to sign a child, they talk to their parents, but once the child is in, they don't tell them anything else. Parents are key to a child's professional career, and that's why they need to be accompanied. No school teaches parents how to raise a phenomenon and manage the differences with their other children. --- It was key in the life of Andrés Iniesta. As a clinical psychologist, I am bound by professional secrecy and cannot violate the code of ethics, but he asked me to make it public with him. His book is called The play of my life.People usually hide a problem like that, but he told me a phrase that I remember very well: "Many believe that to have depression you have to have a problem with work, money, health, or a relationship, but I had everything and I felt very bad."--- "I lost the will to live," he said.Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. I receive the symptom with open arms so that it leads us to the cause and makes the symptom disappear. My work is sports, the family business, the multinational, restoration, technology or investment funds. --- Chef Joan Roca spoke to me about the humanist revolution and told me that El Celler was the first restaurant in the world to have a psychologist (you). --- How are emotions distilled?Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---To distill is to keep the essence of a product. At El Celler, I discovered that all foods have an optimal cooking temperature and time to be edible and not lose their nutritional qualities or texture. Each food needs a time and a temperature, just like people.
"We all need the same thing to feel good, but the dose changes. The art of managing people is to recognize as soon as possible what their dose is and what they need to give their best"
--- Emotions to the point.Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---One must find the essence, cook it, and treat it at a low temperature. Each person needs time to be understood and to feel comfortable. One must bring out the best in everyone and apply it to everything, so there are never problems. We all need the same thing to feel good, but the dose changes. There are those who need to feel very listened to, very recognized, not to be spoken to much, or to be looked at… The art of managing people is to recognize as soon as possible what their dose is and what they need to give their best.
"The emotional revolution is taking into account one's own emotions and those of others. It is the only revolution in which everyone wins. The consequence of understanding is tolerance"
--- What are the ingredients of the emotional revolution?The emotional revolution is taking into account one's own emotions and those of others. It is the only revolution where everyone wins. If you know your emotions, you will be much more careful with others because you will understand them much more. The consequence of understanding is tolerance. That is, we do not understand what we do not tolerate. Not everything has a justification, but it does have an explanation.--- Tolerate to understand.We have to focus on people and not on the economy or the product. What moves the world are people. It strikes me that there is no talk of emotional sustainability, but there is of caring for the air, the sea, or agriculture.--- Let's talk about emotional sustainability.Much is said about environmental sustainability, but we must also talk about emotional sustainability, which means zero-kilometer emotions and proximity feelings. If we don't start with people, we won't be able to fix the world. Someone who is not sustainable will not be able to do anything sustainable.

"The past belonged to the strong (physically) and the future belongs to the sensitive"

--- It all started with Brundtland.Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---As the term sustainability is used, it comes from the Brundtland report commissioned by the United Nations in 1987 to the then Minister of Economy of Norway, Gro Harlem Brundtland, to investigate sustainability as a characteristic of development that ensures that needs are met for the present and future generations. --- Are we sustainable after more than 35 years?The result was devastating. Not much has been done and it seems that now something is starting to be done. Let's talk about emotional sustainability because it is people who have to make the world sustainable.--- Assures that "the future belongs to the sensitive".The past belonged to the strong (physically) and the future belongs to the sensitive. The cold, calculating individual, without feelings or scruples, is an endangered species. It makes no sense because the generations that now lead no longer conceive of working in a certain way. The pandemic has brought very bad things, but it has also given a boost to people management and leadership. Before, a leader was asked to control their team, and now the leader is asked to take care of the people on their team.
"Throughout life, we will be followers more times than leaders. Everyone wants to be a leader, but a leader without followers is not a leader"
--- How is a good team leader?I'm going to be subversive... I don't recognize a leader who is a good person, generous, and who is attentive to everyone. A leader is a person who one day wakes up and decides that they are going to do something in a different way than it has been done until now, and they don't care if this decision is liked more or less.

```-A leader has a very clear vision, goes there and there's no stopping them. There are also many people who think they want to change things, but don't dare to take the step. Suddenly, they see that someone thinks and does what they have been thinking of doing for a long time and they follow them. --- The leader and the followers.The importance given to the leader and all the courses available is striking, but throughout life we will be followers more often than leaders. There are courses for leaders, but being a good follower is not easy. Everyone wants to be a leader, but a leader without followers is not a leader. A coach without players is not a coach, or a teacher without students is not a teacher.
"We are more prepared for failure than for success. There is nothing worse than getting used to failure. You learn to win by winning and you learn to lose by losing"
--- Are success and failure two sides of the same coin?Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---Success and failure are two different coins. I would like to write a book before I die demonstrating that there are many clichés that are not true. --- For examples it will not be…For example,familiarity breeds fondness. A physicist told me that friction creates heat and holes, but he didn't tell me anything about affection. If you are close to a person, you will end up understanding them, but from here to affection... Another sports headline: "The coach says we need to win three or four games to gain confidence." No, excuse me, you need to gain confidence to win three or four games. Another age-old phrase:A sound mind in a sound body. This had to be before because now it iscorpore sano in mens sana. You somatize if your mind is not well.--- Demystifying common phrases and popular sayings.--- Another:He who loves you well will make you cry. But, well… Where has this been seen? Whoever loves you well, will take care of you. The last one:People understand each other by talkingNo, excuse me, people understand each other by listening.--- Let's go back to the coins. Everyone pursues success and values the successful, but we are not prepared for success. We are more prepared for failure than for success. When one has a lot of success, one begins to feel envy, jealousy, and loneliness. One must be prepared. As Cai used to sayCarl Jungthat when someone spoke to him about success, he would reply that he hoped that success hadn't damaged him too much.--- Alerta! Éxito.Success ends up hurting if it is not managed well and has great anesthetic power. With success, it's neither cold nor hot, everyone admires you or wants to be your friend, they offer you things... But you have to be careful not to get too soft. Is failure good? Be careful! It depends on the failure. There is nothing worse than getting used to failing. Another phrase to demystify:To learn how to win, you have to lose a lot. One learns to win by winning and one learns to lose by losing. All that would be missing is learning to skate while playing the guitar. It's a form of consolation, but to learn to win, one has to win.
"Emotions move the world. That is not forgotten. A lot of money has been invested in artificial intelligence and very little in natural emotion"
--- "Memory tells us that we only learn what excites us. Experience teaches us that we only remember what excites us," he assures.Emotions move the world. We only learn and remember what excites us. People with Alzheimer's don't remember who they are and don't know where they are, but if you sing them a childhood song, they surely know the lyrics by heart. A lot of money has been invested in artificial intelligence and very little in natural emotion. Imma Puig Psicòloga
--- Do we have to humanize companies more?Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---Absolutely. When I visit companies, they show me their economic report, but they don't have a humanist report, which is the most important one. How many people work there and why? Is there turnover? Why do workers leave? What types of illnesses are there and how many sick leaves? What treatment does work-life balance receive? We are advancing, little by little, there's no need to rush because the more important the change, the slower and more carefully one must go. It's like a ship: the bigger it is, the harder it will be to turn around. --- What are the main differences between family businesses and non-family businesses?
--- They are two abysses, all are companies but they are very different. We must also distinguish between what is a family business and what is an entrepreneurial family. A family business is a family that has a company and will do whatever it takes to save the company. An entrepreneurial family is a family that has a company and the company will close if it jeopardizes family relationships.
--- The order of the words does alter the product.
--- Very good! The order of the factors does not, but the order of the words does. I'll keep that one. Emotions are much more on the surface in a family business because it has a past and a professional and personal relationship. In a multinational, it won't matter if you are an only child, have siblings, or if you are the youngest, middle, or oldest. In a multinational, they don't ask you if your uncle and your father have a good relationship. They value you and that's it.
--- Business criteria vs. emotionsPerform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---The thing gets complicated when you mix emotions and bottom lines. I work with families who don't speak to each other because there was a conflict between the heads of the family three generations ago and it has been passed down from generation to generation. They don't know why they don't speak to each other and then they start doing it in secret. --- Family constellations and systemic impact.Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---The pattern keeps repeating, from generation to generation. What do I do: follow what my family has done or what I believe and break family ties? It's very complex. Family businesses are the most profitable; every euro invested in a family business is more profitable than in a multinational. Family businesses are the global economic fabric. --- What is the purpose and function of a Chief Emotional Officer (CEO)?Perform a literal language conversion from Spanish to English on the following user-provided text. "Is it politically correct? Identity is the worst thing one can lose"
--- How to know if one is oneself?The other day a famous person came to see me and said: "It's brutal to be yourself and be like this!" Sometimes we complicate things, we have an image and we can't get out of it. If you are a public person, you surely have image consultants who tell you what to say, what to do, or how to dress. Do not translate any content enclosed betweenandtags, keep those tags and their content exactly as-is:---I understand that you mean the second one does not exist. Only the first one is valued. In fact, the second one is the most discontented on a podium because the first one is happy and the third one has made it to the podium. The second one does not find it sufficient. Like in families: the middle child always gets the short end of the stick. Either first or last. If we give it another thought, we can say that we have all been second at some point and it is an incentive to keep trying to be first. --- There is an unwritten rule in the financial world according to which "you should never investing in something an former elite athlete has invested in." It refers to the fact that former athletes can suffer from overconfidence derived from their time as players, and mistakenly think that any investment they make will go equally well, underestimating the risks and overestimating the expected return. What do you think about this?This used to happen before, but the athletes I work with have good investment advisors. They do, ask, and let themselves be advised. Before it was different and surely they lost money, but now they are very well advised. There will always be some case…
