Inlea Legal is the name of the law firm resulting from the union between the American consultancy Inlea, the lawyers Soares & Ávila, and the now defunct Catalan firm The Closing, owned by Barcelona native Carlos M. Lizán. Inlea Legal will work jointly with the American holding company to promote and internationalize Spanish technological startups in the international market.
The Inlea group, a giant in consultancy for startups, has offered a complete variety of services since its foundation in 2005, with the exception of legal services. With the birth of Inlea Legal in January of this year, it promises the complete package to its clients.
The CEO of the new entity, Carlos M. Lizán, realized that in Spain "there is no offer of quality services for scaleups." That is, emerging companies with a desire to expand do not find companies that help them take that step with "quality."
From this market need, Inlea Legal was born, a law firm that focuses on the expansion of Spanish technological startups, especially in the United States, the "main global showcase for being acquired," according to Lizán, and where Inlea (the parent entity) is also strong.
According to Lizán, Inlea Legal offers a 360 service: "We guide startups from minute 0, we give them the complete path and, in addition, we accompany them." Among some of the services it provides are legal mentoring on business models, advice on obtaining financing, and consulting on intellectual property. It also offers specific services such as the registration of patents, trademarks, designs, or databases.
To be able to fulfill all this, it has a multidisciplinary team spread around the world. The profiles are varied, although lawyers, engineers, and economists stand out.
The lawyers are provided by Inlea Legal, with offices in Barcelona (and soon in Madrid), and the engineers are provided by Inlea, based in Silicon Valley. The other professionals are spread around the world, and according to Lizán, the forecast is to expand the workforce. Although not specified in numbers, he does detail what characteristics the profiles must meet: "they must be international specialists who bring things that are not available in Spain," as the objective is to offer the "best and most varied service" to the client.
Inlea Legal is a law firm that focuses on the expansion of Spanish technological startups in the United StatesAlthough the formula is new,the CEO positively values the company's first months of life. For now, they do not venture to put an approximate turnover figure for the end of the year. They will wait to see where the market positions them in December, they comment. Although, for now, "it's liked."
Carlos M. Lizán has worked at Clifford Chance and Garrigues, where he advised the main private equity funds in relevant operations in Spain, such as the sale of Privalia.
Now, two partners have joined his leadership at the head of Inlea Legal: lawyers Flavio Soares, president and head of the new technologies and international department with three decades dedicated to advising SMEs and entrepreneurs, and Josep Ramón Novell, head of the corporate and commercial area with eight years in the startup sector.
