Fundació Catalana de l'Esplai (Fundesplai) has opened this Saturday, November 20, the expansion of its facilities in the Sant Cosme neighborhood of El Prat de Llobregat, where it has invested 17.5 million euros. New facilities have been built that double the built surface, up to 22,000 square meters, and that allow the launch of a training space, add more rooms for the center's hostel ---which goes from 175 to 225 rooms--- and gain space for more cultural and sports activities.
In parallel, Fundesplai has inaugurated the exhibition Eat, act, impact, a large interactive exhibition on healthy and sustainable food, which is integrated into the program of activities of the World Capital of Sustainable Food held by the city of Barcelona this year 2021.
The non-profit organization with a trajectory of more than 50 years working for the education of children and young people wants Eat, act, impact to contribute to raising society's awareness of the need to transform the current food system, being one more action to improve the sustainability of the planet. For this reason, the exhibition invites mobilization and commitment to the great challenges of sustainable food: food waste, the reduction of animal protein consumption, the consumption of local and seasonal products, the health risks of consuming ultra-processed foods, and the reduction of packaging consumption, especially plastic.
According to Fundesplai, the exhibition proposes, in an immersive and interactive way, "a journey of discovery of the serious effects that our way of eating has on our health and that of the planet", but also of the extraordinary opportunities for improvement that society has if individuals change the current food system. A message that Fundesplai expects to reach the maximum number of visitors possible, about 200,000 people, so over the next 18 months it will be complemented with an extensive program of activities, forums, and debates about sustainable food, which will be developed in collaboration with universities, experts, entities, companies, and citizen movements.
The visit to Eat, Act, Impact ---which occupies about 1,500 square meters of exhibition space--- is designed so that schools and leisure centers can incorporate it into their educational programs with adapted tours and workshops with proposals for experimentation, games, and riddles focused on discovering aspects of food ranging from health to science, art, etc.
Similarly, visitors and students will be able to delve into the virtues of sustainable eating through a digital program, via www.menjaactuaimpacta.org, which will be the virtual extension and a way to learn about, communicate with, and interact with the exhibition.
The exhibition is a journey to discover the serious effects that our way of eating has on our health and that of the planetThe Catalana de l'Esplai Foundation, chaired by Josep Gassó, reached 286,810 participants in 2019 through its different programs. Some initiatives that from now on will be consolidated and intensified thanks to the three new facilities that have been gained with the expansion:a training center, of 1,400 square meters, with 14 classrooms, especially aimed at promoting youth employment;an agora for special events;a large multifunctional space of 4,500 square meters for cultural and sports eventsand anew module in the current shelter, which will increase from 175 to 225 rooms. This new module of the hostel will have an area of 2,500 square meters for rooms and 2,500 square meters for a 99-space car park.
The availability of space will allow Fundesplai to deepen its social and educational work in different areas aimed at children, young people, families, and third sector entities. A mission that now, in the face of the current social and environmental emergency, it wants to take further with the new initiative Demà, a space created to promote a series of actions aimed at stimulating awareness of the great future challenges facing humanity.
The Fundació Catalana de l'Esplai reached 286,810 participants in 2019 through its different programsWith this broad philosophy, the Fundació Catalana de l'Esplaiplans to promote new social action and integration programs aimed at vulnerable groups. The educational activity will also be expanded, through leisure programs, environmental education, and health in schools and recreation centers. Currently, the Fundació Catalana de l'Esplai is present in more than a thousand primary, secondary, and early childhood schools, managing everything from midday educational spaces to extracurricular activities or attention to special educational needs. An activity that it plans to increase with its collaboration in midday educational spaces and school canteens, taking into account that this year it has already reached nearly 300 schools and managed more than 30,000 daily meals.
The expansion of the El Prat facilities will be completed with the upcoming opening of a large public park inspired by the Llobregat Delta ecosystem, given its proximity to this protected environmental area.
