EIT Health, the main European body for health innovation, has renewed its board of directors in Spain with the appointment of Francesc Iglesias as president and Mercè Segarra as vice-president. Iglesias is assistant to the management at the Institut Català de la Salut (ICS) and Segarra is the vice-rector for Entrepreneurship, Innovation and Transfer at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB). In parallel, Josep Lluis Falcó, CEO of Genesis Biomed, has been appointed secretary of the Spanish hub of this organization linked to the European Union.
The governing board is completed by IESE professor Jaume Ribera; Elena Torrente, deputy director of digital health development at the insurer DKV; and Ana María Carriazo, technical advisor for Institutional Relations at the Ministry of Health and Families of the Junta de Andalucía. Thus, the new management team is made up of two industrial partners, two health providers and two educational institutions that represent the entire value chain and "bring many years of experience in health innovation, education and entrepreneurship," according to EIT Health Spain, whose general director is Cristina Bescós.
Based in the Parc Científic de Barcelona, EIT Health Spain led up to 37 European projects in the field of health innovation in 2020 and supported the development of 55 startups that managed to raise 67 million euros in funding. The new president of EIT Health in Spain, Francesc Iglesias, emphasizes that the new board "has as its main objective to continue moving along the path of transforming the healthcare system, hand in hand with innovation and digital transformation, and to continue fostering collaboration among all agents in the sector, as well as the involvement of Administrations and health providers in the Spanish innovation ecosystem as a fundamental part of the future."
