The FDA has authorized the commercialization of the drug Seglentis developed by the family pharmaceutical group Esteve to treat acute pain in adults. It is the first proprietary research product from this Barcelona-based company that will be sold in the US and will be done through Kowa Pharmaceuticals America, a Japanese pharmaceutical company.

This drug is an innovative analgesic, composed of a cocrystal form of celecoxib (anti-inflammatory) and tramadol (analgesic) and is designed for the treatment of acute pain following a multimodal treatment approach aimed at four complementary pain relief mechanisms. Esteve assures that the drug represents a new option for acute pain treatment aligned with multimodal analgesia, currently considered the standard of care for pain management.

Esteve's scientific and medical director, Carlos Plata-Salaman, emphasizes that this innovation "is the result of applying crystallization technology to improve the physicochemical properties and pharmacokinetic characteristics of its active pharmaceutical ingredients."

The pharmaceutical group plans to introduce the drug it has developed and patented in European markets once it obtains authorization from the European Medicines Agency.

Esteve's CEO, Staffan Schüberg, states that the company is "very proud" of this achievement, as it "represents recognition of our daily efforts to meet the needs of patients and address the current challenges of acute pain treatment," he added.

The Catalan pharmaceutical company has a long history in research on new drugs for chronic pain, among others through collaboration with Pompeu Fabra University (UPF), with a joint research unit, located in the Barcelona Biomedical Research Park, on the UPF's Mar campus.
