With Barcelona as its engine, Catalonia continues to position itself as a focus for attracting international investment. So much so that in the first three quarters of the year, more than 3,453 million euros in foreign investment landed in the territory, representing a 65% increase compared to the same period last year.
With this figure, Catalonia remains the second autonomous community in attracting foreign investment at the state level. Madrid is in first place, with 16,946 million, based on data from the Ministry of the Interior, which accounts for investments in the territories where companies locate their registered office, without taking into account where the projects are executed.
In Spain as a whole, foreign investment until September climbed to 23,607 million, 21% more than in 2023. In this context, the investment attracted by Catalonia represented 14% of the total that arrived in Spain.
For its part, Madrid accounted for 71% of the investment attracted at the state level. Thus, if the investment concentrated in the capital is left aside, the Catalan provinces attracted approximately half of the investment received in Spain, with their 14% of the total.
Within Catalonia, the province of Barcelona concentrated most of the investments. In fact, of the 3,535 million, 3,191 were registered in Barcelona municipalities, representing 92% of the total. Girona followed Barcelona in attracting investment, with 183 million, followed by Tarragona, with 66 million, and Lleida, with eleven.
