Technological innovation can also be applied to sports, and the Government does not want to be left behind in what is known as the sportech sector, which refers to both traditional and electronic disciplines. The Department of Digital Policies of the Generalitat and the Barcelona Sportstech HUB23 association have allied to promote an international hub in Catalonia, based in Barcelona, promoting the development of companies and attracting investments.

The collaboration agreement foresees the development of different lines of action such as internationally promoting the link between Barcelona and Catalonia with technology and sports, and contributing to the creation of the appropriate environment to facilitate the establishment of startups and large companies. It also aims to connect local and international talent with companies in this sector, and collaborate with other organizations to accelerate the technological ecosystem linked to sports.

Currently, Catalonia, and especially Barcelona, has one of the largest concentrations of sports companies in Europe. Likewise, Barcelona is the third city in Europe in terms of the number of startups and companies working in the sportstech field. In fact, Barcelona Sportstech HUB23 represents more than 100 startups, companies, and organizations working in this sector.

This initiative joins others that also want to position the Catalan capital in this field. The Barcelona City Council wants to give a new opportunity to the Olympic Stadium and turn it into a hub to promote sportech. The council plans to present this project to apply for European funds, in line with the approach of other hubs that have recently been announced in the city.
