Carlos Duran is an entrepreneur and musician. A lifelong freelancer passionate about the art of the four chords. He co-founded Hoy-Voy, which is now the largest driving school in Spain with 39 centers, 400 employees, 300 vehicles, and over 600,000 practical lessons and 115,000 drivers. Let's, however, rewind. Duran studied Business Administration and Industrial Engineering. A childhood memory marked him forever, to the point of feeling stimulated by economic uncertainty and seeking freedom. He is not particularly keen on driving and likes to diversify his energy.
He sees Rock'n Roll in youth. He got drunk on ideas in a Word document and gave wings to madness. The crisis of his 40s gave rhythm and music to his life with the band Arroz Rojo. A few months ago, he won the Young Entrepreneur Award from Aijec. He assures that intuition, emotion, and sensitivity have guided his life. The obsession with metrics and the PMD method (Prove, Measure, and Decide) have also helped. The people around him define him by his passion and empathy. Emotional, but also rational when making decisions. In an ideal world, he would do a musical tour recorded in a Netflix documentary. Or who knows if he would set up a bar in Castelldefels or Tulum. "Living is urgent," sang his admired Pau Donés, Carlos Duran recalls.--- A childhood between Barcelona and Pallars.
--- I am the fourth of a family of five siblings. My father was an industrial engineer and was transferred to the Ascó nuclear power plant and then to Pallars. My childhood memory is seeing my father doing numbers in his office. He had a fixed salary, I didn't understand it, and he thought about tomorrow.
--- Tomorrow.
--- I thought there was no point in living if you could calculate your future economy. For me, it was a trauma. I wanted freedom.
--- How was freedom?
--- I was 16 years old and my father was transferred to Lleida. I made a living giving guitar and physics lessons and working in an office. I wanted to have money, but not depend on anyone.
--- He studied Business and Industrial Engineering.First I thought about Business Studies, but I got overwhelmed and only did two years. I switched to Industrial Engineering, but you had to pass everything.--- He returned to childhood with his father. --- But I didn't want to do his job and economic uncertainty stimulated me. I wasn't able to pass everything in Industrial Engineering and I went back to Business Studies. It occurred to me to become a music group manager. I dropped out of university, took a business administration course and started in the world of concerts. --- After music came digital marketing.--- I created Imaginalia in 2001, I have spent many moments fighting with the market… And until today. This is the journey. It's very hard for me to put all my energy in just one place. Am I an entrepreneur? I have started many things, but without ties.
It's very hard for me to put all my energy in just one place. Am I an entrepreneur? I have started many things, but without ties.
--- What does it mean to be an entrepreneur?
--- An entrepreneur is the person who activates and sets things in motion. They are a producer who converts ideas into projects. The word entrepreneur implicitly means starting and not finishing. You start and you don't know if you will finish. I have started and worked my heart out on many things. Trial and error.
The word entrepreneur implicitly means starting and not knowing if you will finish--- Hoy-Voy is the first driving school with a low cost philosophy and the largest in Spain. Do you like to drive?I am not an enthusiastic driver, nor am I particularly interested in driving. I wasn't particularly excited about creating a driving school company, but coming from María and after meeting Jordi, I couldn't say no.--- He said yes to the low cost philosophy.The universe oflow costit is the result of a dinner we had and that on the way to Lleida made me think about what we could contribute to the world of driving schools. I thought of an efficient model and, from there, came thelow costIt was the time of Vueling, Booking or Ryanair, as well as the anticipation of purchase, demand and price. Having a car stopped has a cost. Once I arrived in Lleida, I grabbed my laptop and got drunk on ideas in a Word document.--- The intoxication of ideas in a Word.I still keep it and it's not too far from what we've done. My brother opened my father's computer, found a mysterious file, read it, and was amazed. I saw more Rock'n Roll in young people than in driving. We created Hoy-Voy when driving schools didn't even have a website or Facebook. The beginning was spectacular.--- Why?We did a very brutal thing: we got rid of the student-teacher binomial. At the time, everyone laughed, but the driving school where my partner worked, which was a leader in Barcelona, closed after three years. Everyone thought we were being frivolous. I asked Jordi what driving school he wanted to have and he replied that the driving school where he would have liked to work. I replied that I wanted to have the driving school where I would have liked to study.
When they tell you that you are crazy, something interesting always happens. Innovation and madness meetings have to be held--- They made a match.
--- I told Jordi that the model wouldn't hold up if each student "married" a single teacher. It's a matrix. Jordi asked me if I was crazy, but when they tell you you're crazy, something interesting always happens.
--- What happened?
--- We had to create a unique methodology for all teachers so that the student would only notice a small difference. We created a teacher Intranet that is now a very powerful multi-teacher and multi-student application. Everything has pros and cons, but we humanized it a lot with a test that is very similar to theSeven Livesbook, movie, car, place to get lost…--- In favor?Training with more than one instructor generates more confidence behind the wheel once one already has their license.--- Against?It may be that one professor asks something that another professor has not noted. --- Hoy-Voy uses an AI learning system and dynamic pricing.We have an intelligent practice planning system that learns by itself. There is a secret that is very simple and effective, but I cannot explain it to you. It has to do with the anticipation of the number of practices and future occupation. The system foresees what will happen and based on this, it moves the price, learns from the past, compares with solvency, and corrects prices three times a day randomly. We are also working on artificial intelligence in the test system that learns from the student's answers. The key is technical curiosity, the universelow costand the fees. I told my partner that we should have the technical department in-house. We pay a high price, but it gives us a very powerful technological layer.--- You have adopted the PMD method: Prove, Measure, and Decide.
--- It's great to have ideas, but turning them into projects involves a lot of energy, time, and money. Prove, measure, and decide. Carlos Blanco knows a lot about this. You have to make the form even if it fails, but if people send the form, it means you're already doing it well. That's the methodologyLeanorAgile. We have an obsession with metrics when making decisions.--- How is decision-making?We have spent little energy on bad ideas. We often hold innovation and craziness meetings. Day-to-day life makes you go crazy, but there is always this climate where anything goes and no one asks stupid questions. It's a way of being.--- How do you see the city of Barcelona?--- Very well, contrary to what everyone says. I'm from here, I've lived abroad and now I live in Alella. Barcelona is an amazing and exciting city! It has and will always have a climate that makes it unique. It's a city with a lot of magnetism and talent is excited to live in Barcelona. A brave commitment is being made to green spaces and mobility.It's great to have ideas, but turning them into projects involves a lot of energy, time, and money. Test, measure, and decide
--- Solutions or mobility problem?
--- I come from Alella by bus, but I could come by car. Many things are happening in Barcelona on Las Ramblas, Consell de Cent or in the superblocks. I wasn't aware of it, but Barcelona has a bigger pollution problem than a mobility problem. Taking the car here is a luxury compared to Madrid. Barcelona's big problem is access to housing: it's very difficult to live in the city center with a normal salary.Barcelona is an amazing and exciting city! The city's big problem is access to housing and pollution more than mobility.
--- Mobility, housing and gentrification.
--- We pollute and we are very much in contact with the Barcelona City Council regarding the zero carbon footprint. There is sensitivity, a lot of desire and energy. It's not the same to work in Barcelona and live in Vic, as it is in Gavà.--- You say life is provisional. Why?
--- It was a thing of the 40s crisis. I have deeply internalized that everything is a beginning, development and outcome. That's when you think that life is a gift and that there are always problems. I am very emotional, but I decide from the rational part. The 40s crisis changed my life and I thought that maybe I had already lived the years I had left.--- And what did he do? --- At 20, I lived intensely and cared very little about everything, but at 40 I became aware of what I had left and remembered that 1+1=2. I started having healthier habits, making less crazy decisions, and thought about buying an apartment instead of renting my whole life. The older you get, the more you realize the party is ending. Now I try not to do things that don't interest me at least a little. As a child, I gave up easily, and this has made me think that perhaps I am not a very committed person. Why the culture of effort?--- Why?--- If you can avoid making an effort…The mid-life crisis changed my life and I thought that perhaps I had already lived the years I had left. The older you get, the more you realize the party is ending
--- Following intuition also implies effort and courage.
--- I'm not passionate about driving, but I am passionate about seeing people who are passionate about what we do. When something interests me, I put a lot of energy into it. If I wake up in the morning and my bad mood lasts a long time, I change my surroundings. I wrote a song titledThe moment idealthat said "Today can be a great day to have a bad day." It's not worth getting used to having a relationship or a life that doesn't fulfill you. You can't lose years of life.--- Your music group Arroz Rojo was also born from the midlife crisis and cholesterol pills.Now I have switched to the correct pills. Arroz Rojo is the mid-life crisis turned into music, which has always been my great passion. I have surrounded myself with people who have joined the project and I presented an album in January 2020 at Luz de Gas. The pandemic arrived. Myhobbyis to make music, but music costs money.--- He dedicated a song to Pau Donés.
--- I spent the pandemic in Pallars, composed a song and shared it with Jaime de Burgos who was the keyboardist for Jarabe de Palo and is the keyboardist for Arroz Rojo. Jaime was also in Pallars and we started playing together and recording the song on piano and voice, remembering the tour he had done with Pau Donés throughout America. Pau died in June and I was very much imbued with all that energy.
--- That which you give me... Is much more than I ask for...Our song is calledForeverand it is a journey through the twelve months of the year. I wanted to draw 2020 through a song. The lyrics were very difficult for me and for the chorus I took a phrase from Pau Donés that says: "Living is urgent".--- "To live is urgent". It's a phrase I would have loved to steal from him, and that's why I somehow dedicate this song to him. Pau Donés has been a benchmark, without having a great voice or great technique. Pau was a genius because he reached people, he made the difficult easy with a simple melody. The song No I can live without you by Coque--- The previous interviewee of Persona a Persona, Ousman Umar, asks you the following question: What is your vision for sustainable mobility 30 or 40 years from now? Future answers for future problems.--- Not even Alfons Cornella predicts the future 30 or 40 years from now... It's an eternity, and even more so in the world of technology. However, I imagine the future of mobility flying and with zero emissions.Pau Donés has been a genius and a benchmark because he arrived and connected with people without having a great voice or great technique. He made the difficult easy with a simple melody

``` I don't have the job, the DGT does. There will have to be a piece of paper with training and the big debate will not be autonomous driving, which is efficient when all driving is autonomous. If humans and machines clash, then you have a problem. If machine clashes with machine, then ethics has a problem. There will be no accidents when all cars are autonomous, but then education or the legal framework will be important. This will be very brutal, and look, we still can't drive automatic cars with a manual license. Public transport? We'll go through the tube.The future of mobility? Flying, zero emissions, drones and through the tube---- Does it worry you?
--- The truth is no, when we get to the river we will cross the bridge. The only decision that keeps me awake is anticipating the change in regulations with the 300 manual cars we have. Making a small mistake is very expensive for us. And what have I done wrong? I ask myself.
--- And what has he done wrong? --- We have not come here to make money and we just want to live a little peacefully. I have been self-employed all my life and there has not been a single season where I thought I would have a quiet end of the month. With Hoy-Voy we have done something very difficult in a very hostile sector. My partner summarizes it very well: salary, schedule and treatment. But in the driving school sector there is a lot of black money and it is a matter of time before they cannot cheat. Even so, we compete.--- How do you compete?
--- The student is very sensitive to price and everyone wants something good, nice and cheap. In Madrid we failed spectacularly and if Spain were 17Catalonia'sit would be great.--- Why did you fail in Madrid?
--- The language of the Catalan market is the theoretical course and practical training. In Madrid, they go for price and there are many cheaters. If you speak a different language than the market, you have to have time and money. In fact, it's better to speak a language that the market understands because re-educating the market can consume a lot of you. We have had to make many changes and it has cost us a lot. There are very different realities.Knowing how to say no is very important
--- Can you imagine doing something different from Hoy-Voy?
--- I would love to do something with music. Many franchisees are my friends and I would be unable to make a decision that would leave the Hoy-Voy project hanging. In an ideal world, and if I won the lottery, I would love to do a tour recorded in a Netflix documentary. And if one day I leave here, it will be to open a bar in Castelldefels or Tulum. I started very early and I'm a bit tired. I would like to stop. --- And why not? --- I also have a very good part: freedom of schedule and movement. Knowing how to say no is very important. Nothing is fantastic and everything is a range of grays. The day a doctor tells you that you have little time left to live, you can only regret how much of an imbecile you have been wasting your life's time. I prefer to think "and not so bad"...SEVEN LIVES OF CARLOS DURAN
