You don't know someone, completely, until you see them interact with children, pets, and waiters (not in order of importance). I have known kind, solicitous, and fawning editors with authors, who would humiliate the waiters who served them a glass of wine or a plate of mussels. "Hey, kid!" you'd hear them utter. And the "kid" could be the most delicate of sommeliers, a golden nose, the winner of the Vila Viniteca tasting competition, yet that man would call him "kid" and demand, with manners that would have scandalized Cinderella's stepsisters, that he bring him, immediately, for example, "a nice cold beer." We don't know why, "nice cold" always accompanies "beer," as if there were a possibility that someone would ask for it lukewarm or at room temperature. And I have known kind, solicitous, and fawning press chiefs with journalists, who would yank the dog's leash with savage fury, because it was engaged in natural activities, such as sniffing trees. And I have seen kind, solicitous, and fawning art professionals, who treated their children the same way the press chief treated the dog and the editor treated the waiter.
Yesterday I saw Leo Messi voting as a Barça member with his son, who accompanied him. The scene amazed me, because both, without saying anything, were in sync. The child seemed very well-behaved. Father and son acted aware that it was not the time to draw attention. With a shyness and resolution that were endearing. The child, who must love football, seemed to be aware that his father is a star. I wondered what it must be like to be Messi's son. Do you get used to it or do you still get excited when you see him do what he does? It seemed to me that the child was not used to it. He looked at him with very good vibes (the father also at him). He didn't throw a tantrum, or anything out of place. I loved him as a child. He is the prototype of child I like.
You will say that I speak this way because I admire Messi. You will be right, but not entirely. If that child yesterday, who looked around with discretion and eagerness, had been the son of a stranger, I would be saying the same thing about the scene. The little one and the older one do something together (something that interests the little one) and behave with perfect neatness and charming humility.
