arcelona wants to project itself as the digital epicenter of Europe. The technology sector is currently one of the few that create quality employment in the city, which is why the Barcelona City Council has designed a plan to multiply the capacity to train local talent in this field and thus contribute to the necessary economic reactivation.
The objective of the consistory is to train 3,000 web programmers in the next five years, as announced by the first deputy mayor and head of the areas of Economy, Employment, Competitiveness and Finance, Jaume Collboni. The initiative will be channeled through the IT Academy, Barcelona Activa's free web programming school. With this action, the municipal agency aims to respond to the job vacancies that exist in the technological ecosystem of the Catalan capital and multiply the success achieved so far with this academy.
In the last two years, Barcelona Activa has trained more than 150 programmers, with a job placement rate of 76% and an average salary higher than that of other sectors.
"Economic reconstruction at this time implies redoubling the commitment to talent; there is no more effective policy for the reactivation of the city's future," emphasized Collboni within the framework of the BizBarcelona and Salón de la Ocupación fairs, which are held at Fira de Barcelona.
"Economic reconstruction implies redoubling the commitment to talent, there is no more effective policy"According to Collboni, "the commitment to talent must also mean a new impulse for the global city as a center for professional exchange and for retaining and attracting talent, with new mechanisms of collaboration between public and private institutions: we must join forces to multiply results."
Cibernàrium moves to Nou Barris
On the other hand, the Barcelona City Council has announced that Cibernàrium, Barcelona Activa's technology dissemination and training service, will move its base of operations to the Nou Barris district in 2021. Cibernàrium trains more than 15,000 people a year in digital skills with the aim of reducing the digital divide and facilitating access to qualified jobs.
This relocation and the web programmer training plan will entail an investment of 5.3 million euros, as announced by Collboni. The first deputy mayor is convinced that digital talent is key to strengthening the economy of the Catalan capital, as it is a transversal tool that can benefit all sectors. Likewise, the municipal plan involves associating this positioning in favor of talent and human capital with the city's brand.
