Barcelona will have 600 spaces for bikes in municipal parking lots

To continue contributing to a better management of public space and offer comfortable and safe spaces for bicycle users, before next summer, Barcelona will double the offer of parking for this type of vehicle to 600 spaces, through the network of underground car parks of the municipal company B:SM.

This will be done by adapting new Biciparks, the safe and exclusive areas for parking bicycles available in the car park network spread throughout the city. Specifically, seven new parking areas will be enabled, with 50 spaces each initially, in the car parks of Calle Bilbao, Ciutat del Teatre, Gràcia Motos, Hospital del Mar, Glòries, Sant Andreu Teatro and Travessera de Dalt.

Currently, with six operational Biciparks, there are a total of 300 users, of which about 215 are subscribers, which places the average occupancy of the network at 75%. These areas are located in the Isla Borbón, Estación del Norte, Mercado de la Boquería, Plaza Joanic, Plaza Naves and Mercado de Sant Antoni car parks.

According to the Barcelona City Council, the public service for parking and guarding bicycles in B:SM car parks has been complemented for years with nearly 900 conventional spaces for two-wheeled vehicles. This service has an average occupancy of 65% and nearly 600 subscribers.

In the existing services, the public company has proceeded to renew the image of the Biciparks, in order to improve the user experience. Inside the Biciparks, bicycles must be chained to the assigned space and users have a patch available to take care of the tires. In addition, soon, these spaces will be equipped with a small self-repair and maintenance station for bicycles with basic tools, thus contributing to safer mobility.

Following the model of the Biciparks that are already operational, the new exclusive spaces for parking bicycles within the B:SM car parks will have video surveillance and an identifier to access the space that allows entry only to people with the right to use this exclusive area: people subscribed to the BSM Car Park network in the bicycle modality or users of the bicycle parking service by day or hours.
