Barcelona will commemorate this Thursday, July 21, the 30th anniversary of the Olympic Games with a mapping on the facade of the City Hall and an institutional event with performances such as that of Los Manolos, the Catalan rumba group that was the star of the closing ceremony held in 1992 at the Olympic Stadium.
According to the event organizers, the focus will be on recognizing volunteers, as their involvement was key to the success of the Olympic event. The city's sporting talent and the generational relay of athletes over these three decades will also be showcased.
The event will take place in Plaça Sant Jaume and will consist of a mapping projection on the City Hall facade, musical performances, and actions on a stage located in front of the consistory's door, presided over by the five Olympic rings. The show will be broadcast live on TV3 and will begin around ten at night. It is expected that people or entities invited to the event due to their connection with the Olympic event or the sports world, as well as a broad representation of members of the Voluntarios 2000 Association, will attend the square, which will be open to the public.
Previously, in the Saló de Cent, the institutional event will be held with Olympic, Paralympic guests, and various personalities. Attendees will be able to see a sample of the material that the Juan Antonio Samaranch Olympic and Sports Museum, which safeguards the legacy of the Games, has provided for the commemoration. Among other objects, an Olympic Games Barcelona'92 torch and another from the Paralympic Games, a wave that served to welcome during the opening ceremony, or one of the podiums used during the sports competition will be on display.
The immersive show with sound and a 360º mapping that will be projected on the City Hall facade will revolve around the transformation of the city, from the 1986 announcement, through the historic moment of the Games' inauguration, making a journey that reaches present-day Barcelona and ends by projecting the Barcelona of the future. "A true spectacle of light and image that will review the substantial change that this global event meant for the city and its inhabitants," explains the consistory.
In addition to Los Manolos, Beth and Jofre Bardagí, who will perform the anthem Amics per sempre, Manu Guix and Maria Hinojosa, and the Cor de Teatre will also perform during the show.
For those who cannot attend the event on the 21st, the mapping projections will be repeated on July 22, 23 and 24. Specifically, there will be three daily showings to enjoy the spectacle in Plaça Sant Jaume at 10:15 p.m., 10:30 p.m. and 10:45 p.m.
