A foreign investment of 811 million euros attracted and supported by the City Council, and 1,235 jobs created through it. This is the balance of the municipal services of the Catalan capital for the year that has just ended. Both investment and job creation double the figures of 2022, and multiply those of previous years.
So much so, that the jobs created triple those of pre-pandemic 2019, and investment for the launch of activity in the city sextuples. These figures have been reached with a clear protagonist: the pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca and its 800 million investment to launch its new hub of global reference.
During 2023, municipal teams have worked on 109 projects, which have materialized into 23 investments, with the management of the Directorate of International Economic Promotion and the Business Landing service of Barcelona Activa. 78% of the executed investments correspond to new implementation projects, while the rest consists of investments by companies already established in the city that have chosen to grow from the Catalan capital.
Municipal services are currently working on a portfolio of 57 projects for 2024, seven of which are already in the process of being established in the cityClose to four out of ten companies that have led this investment have been from the technology sector, while 21% have been from companies that provide services to businesses, and 13% have been from the health and life sciences sector. However, the latter accounts for 98% of the foreign investment facilitated by the City Council, due to the AstraZeneca project. The United States, China, and France are the countries with the most projects implemented in 2023, and 65% of the total comes from companies outside the EU.
