The Barcelona City Council, through the Barcelona Activa initiative, has signed a collaboration agreement with Barcelona Health Hub (BHH) to promote entrepreneurship and innovation in the digital health sector. The signing ceremony was led by Jaume Collboni, first deputy mayor for Economy, Labor, Competitiveness and Finance, and president of Barcelona Activa, and the president of BHH, Cristian Pascual.

This agreement, which confirms the Catalan capital's commitment to digital health as a strategic sector of the economy, aims to strengthen initiatives aimed at supporting entrepreneurship, innovation and business competitiveness, attracting and fostering talent and public-private partnerships in the digital health sector. The scope of action will focus on accompanying the creation and growth of new companies, promoting technological transfer in the sector and boosting scientific, technological and business talent to gain competitiveness.

The first deputy mayor, Jaume Collboni, highlighted that "Barcelona is a leading city in the field of science and technology, with first-class scientific facilities. This positioning responds to a strategy to diversify our productive model, the BCN Green Deal, based on a structural commitment to talent, innovation and strategic sectors, such as Health and Bio. It is within this framework that the alliance with BHH is inscribed, which will surely generate new business initiatives with social return and capacity to improve people's lives."

The president of Barcelona Health Hub, Cristian Pascual, stated that "the latest technological advances have emerged as solutions to many of the challenges facing the healthcare system. This has led to the emergence of digital health as a sector. In this global-scale revolution, Barcelona has all the necessary ingredients to become a reference for innovation in this field. This alliance that we sign today encourages us to continue working to make Barcelona a pole of attraction for talent to build the health of the future."

The agreement also foresees activating the international promotion of Barcelona as a global reference ecosystem in the digital health sector, as well as generating new alliances with international actors and new links with other cities or territories of excellence within this field. The incorporation of the BHH into the BCN Green Deal, the economic agenda of the city of Barcelona 2030, is another of the agreements signed between the two signatories.

The growth of the BHH will entail the need for more spaces, and, in this sense, the Barcelona City Council will study the possibility of expanding the physical headquarters of the BHH, preferably, in the same modernist complex. Currently, the hub occupies 5,000 square meters of the Sant Manuel, Sant Leopold pavilions and the Operations pavilion of the Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau, where 33 startups with a total of 184 workers are housed and it also functions as an interaction center between more than 350 members (startups, corporations, healthcare institutions, universities and investors), with a presence on five continents.

Its objective is to become an international reference center in digital health, attracting innovation and talent.
