Valérie Miles was born in New York, but grew up in Pennsylvania. She has devoted her life to publishing and cultural journalism since she arrived in Spain over twenty years ago. She was appointed as the managing director of Emecé, from where she disseminated the work of John Cheever, Yasunari Kawabata, Silvina Ocampo and Adolfo Bioy Casares, among others, and associate director of Alfaguara, from where she published the works of John Banville or Joyce Carol Oates. Since 2009, she holds the position of managing director of Duomo Ediciones, hallmark of the Italian group Mauri Spagnol, the main publishing house of works of novel authors as Carlos Yushimito, Sebastià Jovani and Rodrigo Hasbún, as well as writers as Azar Nafisi, Aleksandar Hemon, Jayne Anne Phillips or John Gray. She is also dedicated to other endeavours such as co-editing books for the collection New York Review of Books. In 2003, she co-founded with Aurelio Major the Spanish version of the journal Granta. Her articles and documentaries have been published in Spanish newspapers as La Vanguardia and ABC, and in magazines like The Paris Review, Harper’s and Granta. She also teaches in a postgraduate course of Literary Translation at the University Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona. In her freshly-released anthology Mil bosques en una bellota [One Thousand Forests within an Acorn] (2012), twenty-eight essential writers of the Spanish literature single out their favourite excerpts from their own work; among them, Javier Marías, Mario Vargas Llosa, Ana María Matute, Carlos Fuentes and Juan Goytisolo.
