Shopping without physically going to the store is a more than common practice for many citizens in this digital age. Doing so by contemplating the product's details in three dimensions and trying it on is something that is, however, reserved for real-life experience. At least, until now. The startup Algoritcom has designed the first city in the metaverse, where citizens and businesses will be able to coexist and interact. They will do so in a hyperrealistic virtual environment, where users can configure their avatar as similar or as different from themselves as they wish, and businesses can design their stores in the metaverse to offer a digitized 3D shopping experience.
Through this parallel virtual world, Algoritcom aims to generate an immersive experience that transforms the way of shopping, but not only that. The buying and selling of products in virtual stores with realistic distribution is one of the platform's objectives, which goes further and offers endless possibilities. Thus, it will also include the function of a social network, games, and services in a metaverse that aspires to function as a city. The options are unlimited: training classrooms with avatars as students for the academic field; virtual concerts and shows free of physical limitations; the corner hairdresser, where you can book an appointment for next week. And go to the appointment knowing exactly the haircut, having tried various hairstyles through the augmented reality offered by the platform.
Thus, Algoritcom facilitates the interrelation between what happens in its virtual city and reality. And it does so based on one principle: ensuring that new technologies are accessible to any citizen and company. To this end, its metaverse city can be accessed from any device and without the need for accessories such as virtual reality glasses, which enrich the user experience without being indispensable. "We want everyone to have access, without device or company limitations," assures Algoritcom's CEO and co-founder, Joan Sánchez. For this reason, access will always be free for the user, while companies that want to sell their products can do so with monthly subscriptions of up to 150 euros, or for free with a basic version and commissions of 2.5% per sale.
Algoritcom allows users to try on products via mobile and with augmented reality technologyWith these conditions, the project aims to be a gateway for any type of company to the metaverse, so that every business can carve out a niche in this parallel world with this virtual city as a vector. "What we are looking for is for companies to be able to have their space in the metaverse. We don't just create a channel of e-commerce; we are opening a much wider sales channel to sell items in 3D format," Sánchez highlighted. A broader sales channel, for what reason? Algoritcom allows users to try on products via mobile with augmented reality technology; companies can use loyalty techniques such as rewarding winners of platform games; avatars advertise real items by dressing them in the virtual world; brands can design their stores without the limits imposed by reality. "You can enter a building, and it can be an oasis in a desert," fantasized the COO and co-founder of startup, Nicolás Benhamou.
Companies that sell their products through the platform will be able to incorporate access to the virtual city on their own websites. This will allow any potential customer, without being registered with Algoritcom, to view the item in 3D, in a reproduction that includes even the smallest detail. And how are these products digitized? Through an app developed by the team itself, which only needs a video of the product to generate a faithful digital replica of it. In this way, any business can digitize its goods to sell them in this urban metaverse.
"What we want is to bring the metaverse closer to any business, to the neighborhood store, that wants to have a space in the metaverse but doesn't have thousands of euros to do it. This is the opportunity for any brand that wants to make this leap," Sánchez proclaimed. In this context, he pointed out that their business plan is not currently focused on company subscriptions, but on attracting users and generating revenue through advertising and other actions in this virtual city.
Algoritcom will launch its metaversal city to the public in February, with its participation in the Mobile World Congress as a springboard. Its promoters estimate reaching 30,000 users in the first month, channeled through a contract already signed with a large company. The startup is working with the forecast of closing 2024 with a turnover of between half a million and one million euros, and has required an investment of 3.2 million to develop the project, which it designs from Muntaner street.
The project of a city in the metaverse is born without a competitor at a European level and only with an American gaming platform as a comparable initiativeThis initial investment comes from a private Saudi Arabian fund based in Monaco, now with 30% of the startup, which became interested in the project after it participated in an international event. It happened shortly after its five founders came together around this project. Their alliance was born, paradoxically, from the interrelationships generated by buildings and physical cities. Benhamou focused on the sector of e-commerce along with Oriol Carbonell in offices in Sant Quirze del Vallès; when they needed to hire programmers, they contacted developers who operated from the same building: Joan Sánchez, Alberto Quiñonero and Raúl Pérez, who complete the team of five founders of the company, now with 21 employees.
From an initial fruitful joint work, the five founders opted to promote a common initiative, which has materialized in this virtual city. It is born without a competitor at a European level and only with an American gaming platform as a comparable initiative, although far from the hyperrealism that characterizes Algoritcom's proposal. A virtual city without physical limits that is driven from a real city, a Barcelona that in turn aspires to break these limits with initiatives like this.
