Montjuïc concentrates multiple points of interest covering diverse areas, from cultural to sports and scientific, and it does so over a vast area that can be difficult to cover on foot. Now, the area will see its mobility and access improved with a new bike lane, which will run along Ferrer i Guàrdia, Estadi, and Miramar avenues and will be ready by early 2027.
Along more than six kilometers, the bidirectional bike lane will connect points such as the Magic Fountain, Poble Espanyol, the Olympic Ring, the Joan Miró Foundation, and gardens such as those of Joan Brossa, Laribal, Joan Maragall, and Mossèn Cinto Verdaguer.
The bike lane will improve connection with Montjuïc, dotted with dozens of facilities that want to get closer to the public, also through the improvement of its access and mobility. With the forecast that it will be operational in 2027, the cycling path will be ready before Montjuïc fully engages in the celebration of the centenary of the 1929 International Exhibition.
The project is part of the City Council's plan to build 12.5 new kilometers of bike lanes in the city by 2027, as explained by Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet. With its 6.6 kilometers, the Montjuïc bike lane represents more than half of the new cycle paths that the City Council wants to launch by 2027. In addition to building these 12 kilometers in two years, it will also improve another 9.3 existing kilometers.
The works will be distributed across various districts and will include the creation of lanes to connect existing ones, or to move lanes that are currently on the sidewalk and bring them down to the roadway. This will be the case for Diagonal in its section through the Sant Martí district, between Ciutat de Granada and Josep Pla streets, after the avenue's works to make way for the tram to Verdaguer. In total, 4.6 kilometers of unidirectional bike lanes will be built on the roadway, replacing those that currently run along the central rambla of Diagonal. At the other end of the avenue, mobility will also be improved with an additional 560-meter bidirectional bike lane, which will reach Esplugues.
In addition, new lanes will be created from the sea end of Via Laietana to Paseo Joan de Borbó and La Maquinista street, in an action that will improve the connection between Barceloneta and Eixample. At the same time, connectivity between the district and Gràcia will improve with a 75-meter extension in Jardinets de Gràcia between Diagonal and Bonavista street, on a currently interrupted route.
Also to improve connectivity on the sea-mountain axis, Badajoz street in Poblenou will have a new 1.6-kilometer bike lane that will be built with the street renovation works, and that will connect the coast with Guinardó, passing through Poblenou and Camp de l'Arpa. In addition to the creation of these new lanes, the cycling infrastructure will improve with actions to lower them to the sidewalk in areas such as the Sagrada Família, on Provença street between Sardenya and Lepant, and Avenida Meridiana up to Concepció Arenal.
These actions are in addition to the 15.4 new kilometers of bike lane already built during this term, and the more than five improved, within a network of bike lanes that totals 268 kilometers in the city. These actions will add more than 40 kilometers during the term. Before finishing it, the City Council has committed to having the cycling infrastructure project for Plaça Catalunya, to guarantee a safe connection between Ciutat Vella and Eixample, and that of the bike lane between Zona Franca and Drassanes through Ronda del Port, to bring the Marina neighborhood closer to the city center.
