A hundred museums will open on Saturday night in a weekend with 300 activities

Catalan centers celebrate International Museum Day with multiple proposals, with Museum Night as its peak

Catalan museums are already preparing to celebrate International Museum Day. The event, which takes place this Sunday, will open the doors of the facilities for free and fill them with activities, including guided and dramatized visits, family workshops, games, concerts and shows, in addition to the unique, though already traditional, Nit dels Museus (Museums' Night), which will take place on Saturday night into Sunday.

With the motto The future of museums in constantly changing communities, this edition invites to reimagine the role of museums as representatives of cultural identity. It will do so through these activities and open doors, which will be offered in more than a hundred centers in Catalonia, many of them in Barcelona and its metropolitan area.

On Saturday night into Sunday, museums will open between 7 p.m. and 1 a.m., some of them with prior reservation. This edition sees the debut of some prominent centers, such as Casa Batlló and Palau Moja, the recently reopened Hivernacle and the Museu de Matemàtiques de Catalunya, which join the occasion to invite locals to delve into spaces they have not considered visiting or that they usually leave more for tourists.

International Museum Day arrives in a context where the 240 museums and collections registered by the Generalitat received more than 20.8 million visitors in 2024, 5.3% more than in the previous year. In addition, last year saw the birth of two new museums and the expansion of others already operating in new venues.

The options in Barcelona and its metropolitan area are endless, ranging from modernism and the work of artists such as Picasso and Miró to proposals as diverse as the screening and dramatized presentation of El 47 at the Museu d'Història de la Immigració de Catalunya, in Sant Adrià de Besòs.

Militiamen will take over the Museu d'Història de Catalunya, which also proposes workshops and activities, while the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya (MNAC) will offer rock, pop, indie and blues concerts surrounded by art and gastronomic proposals. Macba also joins the day with a program of activities inside and outside the museum. The Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau or an escape room about the industrial bourgeoisie at the Museu Nacional de la Tècnica i la Ciència de Catalunya (Mnactec), in Terrassa, will be other of the many proposals for the day.

Essential sites also open beyond Barcelona, such as the Monestir de Santes Creus and Sant Pere de Rodes, castles like Miravet and Cardona, the Dalí Theatre-Museum in Figueres, the Seu Vella in Lleida, the Romanesque complex of Vall de Boí, Roman Tarraco, or medieval Girona.
