080: a catwalk of experiences and gazes

From the modernism of Sant Pau to the open horizon of Port Vell, 080 Barcelona Fashion begins a new stage in its 37th edition with a change of scenery and shows that bring together emerging brands, expected returns, and international names such as Adolfo Domínguez

Fashion is no longer just fabric and tailoring. It is above all experience. And it is expression. Two concepts that may seem abstract, but which become immediate in events like 080 Barcelona Fashion. Because in this event, these days when Barcelona transforms into a stage for fashion shows, fashion is not limited to what happens on the runway: it extends throughout the entire space. Light transforms the atmosphere, music sets the rhythm, bodies appear and disappear beneath it. But the experience even goes further: it is what remains after the applause fades, when everything has already passed but still resonates in the air.

And it is also in that later moment when the relationship between runway and audience becomes evident, because the fashion experience is always bidirectional. It is the experience of those who walk and are watched, but also of those who watch. Of those who want to set trends on the runway and of those who come to 080 to follow them.

These two concepts —gaze and experience— converge year after year at 080. With 37 editions and a long trajectory, the event has consolidated itself as a key space to observe and experience Catalan fashion today and understand where it is heading. And, over the years, it has also become a way to project Barcelona outwards, making it visible beyond its own context. Although it does not play in the league of the big four fashion weeks —New York, London, Paris, and Milan—, 080 has been building its own space on the international map, with its own voice and perspective.

This was emphatically expressed by theconsellerof Business and Work, Miquel Sàmper, during the presentation of the 37th edition of the 080: "Whoever says fashion is a small thing has no idea. And the data corroborates this: more than 17.5 billion euros in turnover, more than 73,660 workers and almost 1,000 companiesin Catalonia. It's no small thing. And it is at 080 where all these gazes end up meeting. This year, in its 37th edition, 080 Barcelona Fashion, which will run until this Friday, brings together a total of26 shows between national and international designersin a new scenario that completely transforms the experience. After a long history at the modernist Sant Pau, the catwalk begins a "new stage," in the words of the director of the Consorci de Comerç, Artesania i Moda de Catalunya, Moisés Rodríguez, and it does so inel Port Vell, in the Mirador Rompeolas building."There is no other catwalk in the world that is over the sea," Rodríguez remarked.

A new look, a new stage

A displacement that is not only logistical —due to the works affecting the old Hospital de Sant Pau and which have forced the event to be moved— but also experiential.The 080 modifies the landscape: among the multitude of tourists who usually flood Barceloneta, these days slightly discordant elements are detectedExaggerated makeup, superimposed layers, an explosion of colors and accessories... all walk towards the same destination. These are just small clues that indicate something is moving. With its arrival at Port Vell, the 080 opens up to a new horizon, both physical and symbolic.The skyline of Barcelona unfolds on the way to the catwalk: the nature of Montjuïc as a distant backdrop,the constant movement of ships and containers in the port, and the calm of the waves in contrast with the continuous flow of Barceloneta. In this environment, especially on sunny days almost more typical of summer, it's hard to imagine sweaters, cardigans, or long skirts; but inside the runway, the fashion for the next winter season is being defined.

Although the journey to the runway is outdoors, the shows take place in an indoor space, which creates the necessary dimness and calm to observe each embroidery and each fabric. And it is in this building —dressed with spotlights, lights, bleachers, and cameras exclusively for 080— where the change of scenery also becomes evident:from the modernist columns of Sant Pau to the industrial walls of the Rompeolas building.

The stories that shape each experience

On the runway, this idea of experience becomes literal. There is no clear separation between elements: the clothes, the lights, the music, and the movement of the models function as a single ecosystem that cannot be read in parts.The spotlights not only illuminate, but also order and direct the gaze; the music does not accompany the rhythm of the steps, but determines it.And even the gaze of the models—which in some shows challenges the audience and in others shies away from it—is part of this complete device.

But beneath this experience there are also stories and concepts that explain Catalan fashion. Biographical stories that serve to talk about the role of the 080, which beyond a fashion week wants to be a projection platform: a place from which to grow emerging brandsthat are just beginning their journey and give them the possibility of placing themselves on the international map. Returns like that ofBolaño—with a proposal that plays with contrasts: on one hand, the innocence of pink and, on the other, stuffed animals; on the other, a more punk imaginary, crossed by piercings, sculptural textures and high boots— embody that trajectory. Manuel Bolaño debuted at 080 in 2008, thanks to the Generalitat's Bressol project, and over the years he consolidated himself as one of the prominent names in women's fashion, recognized precisely by 080 in 2011 and 2012. And now, in its 37th edition, two decades after his debut, he returns to the runway already established, thus closing a circle within 080 itself. In addition to Bolaño, these days names have paraded that aim to follow their own path within 080. Brands that, despite their still incipient trajectory, have been consolidating themselves as recurring presences on the runway.Firms like AAA Studio, Arnau Climent's brand, which presents itself as a generational cry —not in vain the collection is titled ¡¡¡Señora, suélteme el brazo!!! (Madam, let go of my arm!!!)—, or Guillermo Justicia, with a proposal that addresses fragility and fear, have become regular names in the latest editions of 080. But 080 does not forget those brands that it can already consider classics, or even old acquaintances of the runway. Prestigious firms that have these two dates marked —in their spring and autumn editions— and that return regularly. From the visual contrasts and the most irreverent spirit ofCusto Barcelona, up to the sobriety and tradition of the point ofScorpion, which has made garment manufacturing and textile quality its identity.

Among this year's shows, proposals and stories have also stood out, reinforcing the idea that the 080 is increasingly playing in the big international fashion league. It is no coincidence that acclaimed designer Adolfo Domínguez debuted on the runway precisely in the year of his 50th anniversary, with a tribute to his own career, nor that Dominnico decided to blow out the candles of his tenth anniversary at the 080. This international influence explains why, among models and attendees, there is an increasing presence of recognized figures. From singers likeNatalia Lacunza or Metrika, even personalities likehasta personalidades como Carmen Lomana or Jessica Goicoechea parading, going through afront rowfull of prominent names from the fashion world and beyond. Because at 080, the experience is not only what is seen, but also who sees it. And this also translates off the runway: looks that could have come straight from the show occupy the spaces of the venue, while other attendees —from guests to fashion students whose schools have given them tickets— have spent weeks thinking about what the most appropriate outfit will be to live the experience.

And even the experience of how it is seen. A ritual reminiscent of tennis —and which these days can also be recognized in another space in Barcelona, the Reial Club de Tennis Barcelona, setting of the Barcelona Open Banc Sabadell - Conde de Godó Trophy—: heads moving from side to side following the models' steps, gazes concentrating in silence, almost with the same contained tension of a stand during a decisive point. An expectant silence that is only broken by the rhythm of the music, the roar of the drone flying over and recording, and the constant flashes of the cameras. Beyond the gazes, a constellation of lit screens tries to capture every moment.

Attentive gazes trying to perceive patterns, repetitions, and common points to understand how the next season will be read. At 080, trends do not appear as an order, but as a consequence of what is experienced on and around the runway. Monochromatism dominates many proposals, especially in blacks and dark tones; bows and romanticism reappear as a recurring gesture; tailoring regains prominence, and garment structures expand. There is also a constant presence of transparencies and overlays, as well as an interest in marked textures and voluminous fabrics.

All these signals point, in the end, to the same idea: that fashion is not defined only by form, but by the experience it generates. An experience that is not limited to the runway, but extends to the gazes, the silences, and the way the public interprets and makes fashion their own.
