Walden never ends

What happens when a person comes into contact with the forest? How can the assets emitted by plants interact with our health? The Healthy Forests for a Healthy Society project, promoted by "la Caixa" Social Work and coordinated by CREAF and the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the UAB (ICTA), seeks to examine the role that forests play in people's physical health.

Discovering the scientific basis of the feeling of well-being provided by contact with the natural environment is what is leading a group of researchers from the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the UAB (ICTA) to delve into Montseny: a forest that, due to its characteristics, "has so many varieties of species —from oaks to beeches, passing through pines and cork oaks— that its results are easily extrapolable to any forest in Europe," as stated by Martí Boada, professor and researcher at ICTA.

The research, which is promoted by "la Caixa" Social Project and coordinated by CREAF, seeks to demonstrate that trees and people may be united by many more things than we believe: what happens to a person when —sick or healthy— they come into contact with the forest. As Boada explains in this ALMA article, "it is about ending the separation between culture and science, about understanding that human beings and nature are part of the same thing and relate directly. Trees are also a living mass, a society that evolves."

"The second part of the study," says researcher Roser Maneja, "will be precisely to see how this forest environment, the macrobiotic, relates to the human microbiome, our body." The researchers will analyze the active principles emitted by plants and how they can interact with our health.
