In Velfont, they have been dedicated for more than 50 years to a part of the bedroom that is almost never seen. Pillows, covers, mattress protectors, or duvet fillings are part of that silent universe of rest on which the Catalan company has built its business. Now the company has just introduced something unusual there: probiotics.
Under the name AlerProTECH, Velfont has launched a new textile range designed to reduce allergens from dust mites, pollen, and pets through biotechnology applied directly to the fabric. The technology has been developed for nearly three years and, according to tests carried out by external laboratories, achieves reductions of over 95% in the main allergens present in the home.
"Allergies are the silent pandemic of the 21st century," summarizes Anna Blanqué, the company's marketing director and one of the project managers. "They already affect one in three people, and forecasts indicate that this figure will continue to grow." Until now, a large part of anti-allergic solutions for rest focused exclusively on combating dust mites through biocidal treatments. Velfont's proposal seeks to broaden that approach and act directly on the particles responsible for allergic reactions.
The new range is designed to reduce not only dust mite allergens but also pollen and pet allergens, two of the factors that have increased the most in recent years within the home. "We wanted to develop a more complete, more sustainable, and also healthier solution," explains Blanqué.
The use of probiotics in textiles is still very unusual. These living microorganisms, widely used in other sectors such as food and pharmaceuticals, are integrated into the fabric and generate enzymes capable of degrading allergens present in the resting environment. As the company explains, Velfont is also the first company in the country to apply this type of technology to bedding textiles.
One of the aspects that the company particularly highlights is the durability of the treatment. Unlike other systems whose effectiveness diminishes with washing, the probiotics continue to regenerate even after regular domestic maintenance, maintaining the product's effectiveness throughout its useful life. "They are living organisms that continue to reproduce and regenerate after washing," says Blanqué. "That allows us to guarantee that the effectiveness is maintained until the end of the product's useful life."
Textile innovation from Barcelona
Founded in Barcelona more than 55 years ago, Velfont has historically specialized in categories related to rest such as pillows, mattress protectors, covers and duvet fillings. The company currently sells in more than 50 countries, invoices 41.5 million euros and maintains a growth trajectory within a highly globalized market where much of the offering ends up being reduced to price and basic functionality. In view of this, the company defends a strategy based on innovation, added value and made in Spain manufacturing. In fact, innovation has become one of the main pillars of the brand and a good part of its recent launches. "All the products or solutions we launch seek to genuinely improve people's quality of rest," explains Blanqué. "Whether from comfort, hygiene or health, we always try to provide something more than the basic function of the product." This approach has also led the company to develop other lines linked to thermoregulation or thermal comfort, capable of absorbing excess body heat and releasing it later to improve the thermal sensation during sleep.
The company also believes that the rest sector will increasingly evolve towards products linked to health, sustainability and well-being. A transformation that, as explained by the company, is also closely linked to a consumer increasingly aware of the importance of rest and more willing to invest in products that have a real impact on their quality of life.
