The Barcelona Museum of Contemporary Art begins a new stage with the appointment of Valentín Roma as director of MACBA. The General Council of the Consortium has endorsed the jury's proposal, which highlighted the solidity of his project and the coherence of a career closely linked to critical thinking, contemporary creation, and cultural management. Roma takes over from Elvira Dyangani Ose at the helm of an institution that faces the coming years with the challenge of strengthening its role within the international art scene and continuing to expand its connection with the city.
Writer, art historian, and Doctor of Philosophy from the University of Southampton, Roma knows well the institution he will now lead. Between 2013 and 2015, he was chief curator of MACBA itself, and since 2016, he has been at the head of La Virreina Centre de la Imatge, where he has promoted a program recognized for its ability to connect art, thought, and public debate. Throughout his career, he has also curated exhibitions for international reference museums and cultural centers and has developed an intense activity as an essayist and novelist. His appointment marks the return to the museum of one of the most influential figures in Barcelona's cultural scene in recent years.
