Do you want to know the most prominent Catalan singers of today? We know: this article is very ambitious but, here, we want to introduce you to some of the most interesting voices from Catalonia that we believe you absolutely must know. We know there are many, no, very many interesting Catalan singers in the history of music. But, as encompassing them all would be an arduous task, we wanted to make a selection of those singers who seem most interesting and essential in current music.

Of course, there are names of very established artists in Catalan music such as Lluis Llach, Joan Manel Serrat or Loquillo. But in this article we are going to focus on current artists who are succeeding in music today.

Rosalia, one of the essential Catalan singers

Rosalía is not just a singer: she is a mass phenomenon! This Catalan artist, born in Sant Esteve de Sesrovires, has managed to win over half the planet with her groundbreaking and current proposal that fuses flamenco essence with trap and urban music sounds. The result? She has won 2 Grammy awards for her song "Malamente" which catapulted her to fame.

Silvia Pérez Cruz

From Palafrugell, Girona, comes another of today's most prominent Catalan singers: Silvia Pérez Cruz. Today she stands out for her style of popular music sung in both Catalan and Spanish, as well as her participation in different shows. But the kick-off of her career was thanks to the group Las Migas, of which she was the main voice. In 2012 she released her first album which was an absolute success and, now, this singer fills auditoriums and sells out tickets in very few days.

Andrea Motis

We continue with female voices to talk about one of the youngest and most recognized jazz singers on the current scene: Andrea Motis. This young artist from Barcelona was born in 1995 and, despite her young age, has boasted of being one of the most outstanding artists of the moment. She is a trumpeter, saxophonist and singer, a true artist from head to toe.

Albert Pla

An irreverent, nonconformist, and controversial artist. This is Albert Pla, another of the most interesting and creative Catalan singers. Originally from Sabadell, Pla is a singer-songwriter and writer who has songs in both Catalan and Spanish. His songs contain a great philosophy where the artist's personality, moving between social denunciation and controversy, is felt. Without a doubt, an artist who will not leave you indifferent!

Miguel Poveda

Yes: Miguel Poveda is Catalan! Specifically, from Badalona. This artist is one of the most recognized names in the current flamenco scene and interprets a large number of musical genres that make his albums full of nuances. He is an experimental artist: he seeks to cohere the purest flamenco with other arts to investigate other artistic and scenic possibilities. He has won the Gold Record and has been nominated more than 3 times at the Grammy Awards.

Manel

Another very prominent group in current Catalan music is Manel. It is a band widely followed in the "indie" movement that mixes folk and pop trends to create intimate songs with a great message. In 2008, their career began, and since then, Manel has continued to achieve success and recognition throughout the country.

Love of Lesbian

From Sant Vicenç dels Horts comes this Catalan music band that is very well known today. Their career began in 1997 but their big hit came in 2012 with the release of "La noche eterna. Los días no vividos" (The Eternal Night. The Unlived Days). Santi Balmes, Jordi Roig, Ricky Falkner, and Oriol Bonet are the four members of this indie rock group who have also dared to delve into theater with the presentation of the show "Miralls i miratges" (Mirrors and Mirages).

Txarango

Among the most recognized Catalan singers, we also cannot overlook the members of Txarango, a group from Ripollès that is very well known both nationally and internationally, singing their songs in Catalan. They have some great hits like "Una lluna a l'aigua" (A Moon in the Water) which achieved great success with the public. Their musical proposal is a mix of cultural fusion in which Latin, Jamaican sounds, and, of course, Catalan rumba are fused.

La Pegatina

It is another of the Catalan groups that are currently most successful within the alternative and mestizo scene. La Pegatina is a band that came out of Montcada i Reixach and self-released their first CD. But the success was overwhelming and, since that first album "Al Carrer!", the career of this band has been unstoppable. Today, La Pegatina not only plays on stages in the country but has also traveled through Latin America achieving a record audience.

Las Migas

A group of Catalan singers made up solely of women. This is Las Migas, a flamenco fusion band that emerged in Barcelona and, at first, had Silvia Pérez Cruz as its main voice. Now, this group is made up of Marta Robles, Begoña Salazar, Roser Loscos, and Alicia Grillo, a quartet that offers songs that mix classical music and the flamenco essence. "Perdóname Luna" is a work of art, without a doubt.

Macaco

Another of the Catalan singers worth knowing is Macaco, from Barcelona. This artist emerged from the band Ojos de Brujo and, after their collaboration, decided to embark on his solo career. Something that was a very good idea because Macaco has a very personal and unique style: a mestizo music with a strong social message and a philosophy of respect for the earth and for human beings. Songs like "Moving" or "Con la mano levantá" are a true anthem today.

Estopa

The Muñoz brothers, from Cornellà de Llobregat, cannot be missing from a list of current Catalan singers worth knowing. But their career began a long time ago and the success of the two artists For many, this is one of the best Catalan music groups as they managed to renew rumba and make it more current and rogue. With "La raja de tu falda", their first hit, they achieved great recognition among the public and, since then, their career has not stopped growing. Today, they continue to fill large stadiums like the Palau Sant Jordi which, many times, hangs the "sold out" sign.
