The essential plays to see this autumn in Barcelona

Torna 'L'herència' al Lliure

Actors and playwrights such as Joel Joan, Lluís Homar, Miriam Iscla and Juan Mayorga headline the first premieres of the theatrical season in the Catalan capital.

18 august of 2026 at 05:30h

Autumn is about to arrive and, with it, new theatrical premieres. Barcelona's stages are ready to present their main ingredients: great names in dramaturgy, the return of classics with a more current perspective, poignant comedies about relationships, and the celebration of emblematic anniversaries, such as the 50 years of the Lliure or the 10 years of La Beckett

Let's review the essential plays for the start of the new season that will take place in great temples such as the Teatre Lliure or the TNC, but also at the Goya, Sala Beckett, or Sala Fènix.

No miris at Teatre la Biblioteca

From September 22 to October 18, 2026

Directed by Joan Arqué and with dramaturgy by the collective Cultura i Conflicte, No miris is a dramatic thriller that analyzes the gray areas of the human condition. The play stages a gallery of characters trapped on the border between political commitment, betrayal, guilt, and silence, to analyze how the abysses of a family end up being a reflection of the cracks in an entire society.

The piece invites us to reflect on the nature of evil and emotional ties: how a monster is recognized, if it is possible that we ourselves are one, and how love for a father repudiated by his environment is articulated. An exceptional cast made up of Pep Cruz, Marta Marco, Erol Ileri, and Gemma Martínez brings to life these characters who try to put words to what is often chosen to be hidden.

53 domingos at Teatre Condal

From September 9 to 27, 2026

Filmmaker and playwright Cesc Gay returns to the stage to analyze the dynamics of family relationships. The plot centers on three siblings who must meet to make an inevitable decision about their 86-year-old father, whose behavior is becoming incomprehensible and difficult to manage on a daily basis.

What initially presents itself as a rational and orderly meeting quickly turns into an emotional minefield. An apparently harmless phrase acts as a trigger for decades of tensions, hidden secrets, and unresolved resentments to explode. Interpreted by Julián López, Pepa Charro, Xavi Mira, and Candela Serrat, the comedy also coincides with its film adaptation for the Netflix platform.

Songe at the TNC

October 1 and 2, 2026

Under the direction of Marcial Di Fonzo Bo, this international proposal mixes two pieces of European dramatic literature: A Midsummer Night's Dream by William Shakespeare and the unfinished Comedia sin título by Federico García Lorca. The staging creates a dreamlike universe that fuses theatre, audiovisual language, and pictorial references to the universe of Francisco de Goya.

The show features the presence of l'Académie Européenne-Angers, a young, multilingual, and experimental company made up of actors selected from various theatres across the continent, including the TNC itself. This cast combines disciplines such as acting, dance, circus, and performance to make us think about how love, the intimate, and the political intersect in times of crisis.

El gran inquisidor at Teatre Goya

From October 1 to 11, 2026

Actor and director Lluís Homar joins the Piano Duo Brugalla & Stambolov to create a scenic and musical proposal conceived as a small auto sacramental. The show takes as its central axis the legend of the Grand Inquisitor, one of the best-known chapters of Fyodor Dostoevsky's novel The Brothers Karamazov, and which is set in 16th-century Seville (the harshest years of the Inquisition).

The story shows the return of Jesus to earth and his subsequent imprisonment and interrogation by the old cardinal of the Inquisition. This text about the struggle between human freedom and authoritarian power is interspersed with the silence of Johann Sebastian Bach's music and Olivier Messiaen's Visions de l'Amen, performed live by two pianos.

Bouvetøya (La necessitat d'una illa) at Teatre Lliure de Montjuïc

From October 1 to 25, 2026

Written in 2020 by Ivan Benet, Cristina Genebat, Julio Manrique, and Sergi Pompermayer, this dystopia inaugurated the Temporada Alta festival in full lockdown as a declaration of love for the necessity of dramatic art. The story follows the journey of a group of friends to Bouvetøya, an uninhabited islet covered in ice in the middle of the South Atlantic Ocean, on an expedition that ends up making all the sense in the world.

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Teatre Lliure, the team recovers and rewrites the text to offer a message of hope directed at the future of the performing arts. Directed by Julio Manrique, the cast includes regular performers of the house such as Mireia Aixalà, Damien Bazin, Ivan Benet, Cristina Genebat, Xavier Ricart, Marc Rodríguez and Andrew Tarbet.

Bons i dolents at Teatre Condal

From October 6 to November 1, 2026

Joel Joan signs and leads the cast of this ironic comedy directed by the Argentine Nelson Valente. Under the premise that "we are all good until it suits us not to be", the proposal begins with a daily encounter between two couples of friends that ends up going wrong due to personal differences, envy and unresolved economic problems.

The evening definitively collapses when Ricard (Joel Joan), a man in the midst of a 50s crisis who owes a significant amount of money to his best friend, arrives at dinner announcing that he will be a father again with a partner different from his wife. Accompanied by Agnès Busquets, Oriol Casals, Ana Gago and Nesa Vidaurrázaga, the text analyzes the limits of friendship and the moral justifications of selfishness.

Morning Sun at La Villarroel

From October 9 to November 8, 2026

British playwright Simon Stephens presents a text about the passage of time, memory and the invisibility that often accompanies old age. The play traces the life of a woman in New York City over different decades and shows how friends, lovers and landscapes transform as the years go by.

Under the direction of Pau Roca and with translation by Adriana Nadal, the play is performed by Miriam Iscla, Anna Güell and Raquel Ferri. These three actresses bring to life three generations of women (grandmothers, mothers and daughters) in a portrait that intertwines victories, daily losses and the search in a great metropolis.

Panorama des del pont at Teatre Goya

From October 16 to November 15, 2026

Sílvia Munt directs one of the great classics of 20th-century American theater, written by Arthur Miller. Set on the docks of Brooklyn in 1955, the story portrays the life of a community of Italian immigrants where hard work, family loyalty, and an unwritten code of honor maintain an extremely fragile social balance.

The conflict erupts when Eddie Carbone, a longshoreman played by David Selvas, welcomes two relatives who have illegally entered the United States into his home. Eddie's obsessive attraction to his niece will lead him to break the neighborhood's law of silence and unleash an inevitable tragedy. The cast is completed by Laura Conejero, Laura Gaja, Eduard Buch, Nil Cardoner, and Jan D. Casablancas.

Júlia – 15 anys més tard at Lliure de Gràcia

From October 22 to November 15, 2026

In 1985, the Teatre Lliure premiered the production of Miss Julie directed by Fabià Puigserver and starring Anna Lizaran and Lluís Homar. Fifteen years after an adaptation of August Strindberg's text, Brazilian creator Christiane Jatahy is commissioned to revise the piece and recontextualize it within the contemporary social context of Catalonia.

This new production, created jointly with Temporada Alta, blends cinematic and theatrical language. Catalan actors Júlia Genís and Moha Amazian star in this show while interacting with recorded images from the original version. This aims to highlight the relevance of themes such as class struggle, misogyny, and social prejudices.

Palabra de perro at Teatre Romea

From October 28 to November 8, 2026

Playwright Juan Mayorga recovers the characters of Cipión and Berganza, the two dogs who acquire the gift of speech in Miguel de Cervantes' exemplary novel The Dialogue of the Dogs, to observe contemporary society. Through their dialogue, the two animals observe the weaknesses, lies, and contradictions of human behavior.

Directed by Rakel Camacho, the piece uses words to question who has the power to speak the truth and how the values of morality and justice are established. The production is performed by Cecilia Solaguren, Jimmy Castro, and Jorge Kent.

Compto cada passa meva sobre la terra at Sala Beckett

From November 12 to 29

Inserted within the cycle of homage to the career of the actor Oriol Genís, this text written by Lluís Cunillé and directed by Xavier Albertí presents the confessions of a newsagent admitted to a hospital room. Through conversation with his roommate, the protagonist explains the details of an apparently banal life that hides dark areas.

The show has been recognized with the Critics' Award 2025 for Best Lead Performer for Oriol Genís, in addition to receiving two nominations for the Max Awards 2026 in the categories of Best Authorship and Best Actor. The production will once again bring together three fundamental names at Sala Beckett to understand the history of recent Catalan dramaturgy.

L'herència at Lliure de Montjuïc

From November 14 to December 13, 2026

After the great success obtained by both the public and critics, the monumental work written by the American Matthew López returns to the Lliure. Inspired by E. M. Forster's novel Howards End, the proposal portrays a group of young gay men in New York City during the years after the AIDS crisis and in the midst of Donald Trump's mandate.

Directed by Josep Maria Mestres, the work invites reflection on the feeling of belonging, generational grief, responsibility towards the past, and the need for community.

L'hostal de les tres camèlies at the TNC

From November 26, 2026 to January 3, 2027

Carme Portaceli brings one of the few theatrical pieces written by Mercè Rodoreda: The Inn of the Three Camellias to the Sala Gran of the TNC. The plot takes place in an inn where Andreu dominates three women: his wife, his speechless mother, and the maid Camèlia, who does not accept her submissive role and tries to become the new mistress of the house.

The dramaturgy by Pablo Ley intertwines the original text with biographical elements of Rodoreda herself to analyze patriarchal control, violence in emotional relationships, and forms of female resistance. It is a co-production with the Teatre Principal de Palma featuring a cast made up of Judit Farrés, Isak Férriz, Xavier Frau, Cristina Genebat, Toni Gomila, Pepa López, and Clara de Ramon.

IAIA, memòria històrica at Sala Fènix

From December 16 to 20, 2026

Alba Valldaura presents this proposal that is born from a swing in a residence to become a tribute to an entire generation. Through the eyes of Mercedes, an elderly woman who reviews her life, the play talks about great social events such as the Second Republic, the Civil War, the dictatorship, and the Transition with the most intimate and daily details of childhood, family, and first loves.

The show claims the role of our grandmothers as often forgotten protagonists of official history. Under the premise that the past must be turned over, but having read it first, actress Alba Valldaura builds a reflection on identity and memory.
