The University of Barcelona (UB) has incorporated a state-of-the-art electron microscope that allows for the dynamic observation of the distribution of proteins, viruses, and nanoparticles, among others. The apparatus is located at the Barcelona Science Park (PCB) and combines the maximum performance of a high-resolution and analytical microscopy equipment with innovative features. For example, it also opens the door to the three-dimensional reconstruction of biomolecules and viruses.
The new microscope allows for modifying the sample's temperature, applying electrical polarization, and working in liquid media. Thus, structural or chemical changes can be observed with nanometric, or even atomic, resolution in processes such as the degradation of electrochemical batteries or the synthesis of nanoparticles. It also allows for analyzing protein interactions at the nanometric scale to understand phenomena of aggregation or stabilization of substances of therapeutic interest.
The microscope has involved an investment of almost 3.4 million euros and has been co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund of the European Union within the framework of the FEDER Operational Program of Catalonia. It is accessible to the entire scientific community, public research institutions, and the business sector.
The President of the Generalitat, Salvador Illa, inaugurated it this Thursday, accompanied by the Minister of Research and Universities, Núria Montserrat, the Rector of the UB, Joan Guàrdia, and the director of the PCB, Maria Terrades. In his speech, the President of the Generalitat highlighted the importance of having such technology in a public university and defended that advancements and technology must be "at the service of improving the living conditions of citizens" and not just a few.
Illa assured that the inauguration of the microscope symbolizes the commitment to technology and research "framed within a public institution" and stated that what he wants for this research done from Catalonia is "ambition and leadership" throughout Spain and Europe. In this sense, he defended that it is also important to be within the talent circuit, not only retaining it but also attracting it from outside with equipment like the new electron microscope at the PCB.
