The Logistics Activity Zone (ZAL) of the Port de Barcelona embarks on a path towards energy self-sufficiency. It will do so with a plan through which it will have the largest rooftop photovoltaic park in Europe. When all installations are operational, the installed power will be 40 peak megawatts, energy equivalent to the consumption of 41,250 people.
Cilsa, the ZAL's managing company, owned by the Port and Merlin Properties, has designed a project to install panels on most of the warehouses in the area. For this, it foresees an approximate investment of 24 million euros.
The action will be developed in phases until 2026, and the first step to complete it was taken this week: the placement of solar panels on the Decathlon warehouse has begun. This will be an installation for shared self-consumption of 91,692 square meters, equivalent to 15 football fields.
This first installation will have 19,846 solar panels, which will produce energy equivalent to the consumption of about 8,500 people. It has an investment of six million euros, and will allow for a reduction in emissions of 2,465 tons of CO2 annually. The forecast is that the installation of this first warehouse will be completed in March.
The next step towards energy self-sufficiency will be the installation of solar panels in different warehouses in the logistics activity zone of El Prat. Subsequently, the necessary facilities will be built to supply 100% of the energy consumed in the logistics zone.
The photovoltaic park will generate green energy also intended for consumption by the port community and the Port de Barcelona itself. The magnitude of the plan places it as "one of the largest photovoltaic rooftop projects worldwide," said the president of the Port of Barcelona, Lluís Salvadó. He highlighted that "the key to the project's viability is that this energy will be consumed in proximity," since current regulations allow the energy produced to be supplied to facilities within a two-kilometer radius. Ayes, green energy will be generated for consumption by the port community and Port de Barcelona itself. "This is an element that provides more sustainability to energy distribution," Salvadó concluded.
