The Port of Barcelona tests a new, more efficient waste management system

The Clever-volume project, created by the Portuguese startup 3D Modelling Studio, will allow for improved waste management of port infrastructure

The Port will implement a new system of sensors that calculate the volume of solid waste with high precision, remotely and in real time, which will eliminate the need for supervisors and reduce annual costs derived from these operations by 136,000 euros. Since November 2019, the pilot test of this system has accumulated a duration of more than 10,200 hours.

The Clever-volume project, developed by the startup 3D Modelling Studio, was the winner of the SmartCatalonia Challenge 2019, which brought together nine SMEs that proposed solutions to address a total of six challenges posed by the Port of Barcelona.

This new system, in addition to reducing costs, will also help reduce marine pollution derived from port activity. "We will study the environmental contribution of 3D Modelling Studio's solution, since a reduction in marine pollution has been observed thanks to the increased efficiency in waste measurement and the reduction of response times," said the president of the Port of Barcelona, Mercè Conesa.

Work is currently underway on a new version to be tested in the operational environment. The main challenges of the project today are: to approve the equipment and certify volumetric measurement, to complete the automation of the measurement process and interoperability with maritime databases, including waste classification, and to integrate environmental metrics into waste measurement reports.
