Barcelona is a pole that combines fintech startups, global companies, and financial entities, with knowledge hubs such as the Barcelona Finance Cluster or the BFS-IEF, to convert innovation into real impact on the financial sector.
Barcelona has been playing in the first division of digital innovation in the European sphere for years, but in the fintech sector, the qualitative leap is especially visible: the city has become an urban laboratory where payment companies and startups, digital loans, wealthtech, regtech, open banking, and initiatives linked to blockchain and digital assets coexist. This density of actors, added to the local technological pole, creates an ideal environment to test products, attract clients, and scale, and contrasts with a traditional financial sector that for various reasons has diminished its prominence in our city.
Within this ecosystem of growing dynamism, a recent institutional impulse is the creation of the Barcelona Finance Cluster, with a specific line of work in Innovation and Technology to accelerate the transformation of the financial sector and strengthen the competitiveness of Barcelona.
And, precisely, among the actors that drive the cluster and provide traction in knowledge and talent, the Institut d'Estudis Financers (IEF) stands out through its business school Barcelona Finance School (BFS), which functions as a financial knowledge hub oriented to the most innovative areas —fintech, AI applied to finance, and decentralized finance— and helps convert trends into applicable competencies and projects.
In parallel, Barcelona is also equipping itself with city infrastructure for financial innovation: it is worth mentioning the Barcelona Finance Hub at the Barcelona Stock Exchange (conceived as Pier 05 of the urban innovation campus), designed as a meeting point for startups, corporations, investors, and talent.
Another driver is the arrival and consolidation of multinational fintechs that have chosen Barcelona to locate technological and innovation teams. To give some examples, the unicorn neobank N26 has promoted a tech hub and its competitor Revolut has announced a technology center to serve the region, while the French Qonto, present in half a dozen European countries, has been strengthening its presence in the city as a base for the Spanish market.
If today we speak of an ecosystem, it is also because much progress has been made in the last fifteen years: when some pioneers started in Barcelona, the term fintech was still very uncommon. Kantox, which was acquired in 2023 by BNP Paribas bank, was founded in 2011 when there were almost no references in the sector; LoanBook began its journey in 2013 in the crowdlending vertical; and the multinational Digital Origin (later also known as Pagantis) also falls within that first wave of 2011-2013.
This ecosystem, inevitably, acts as a magnet for talent. The combination of quality of life, universities, business schools, physical hubs, professional communities, and a constant event agenda facilitates the attraction of international profiles. And we are not just talking about developers: also specialists in product, growth, risk, regulatory compliance, data, and cybersecurity, areas where fintech needs muscle to compete and gain trust.
The future prospects are good because capital continues to look towards projects with traction. In 2025, Catalan startups raised 1,131 million euros in investment (third best historical record), according to the Acció report based on Dealroom data. In this context, Barcelona can consolidate itself as a benchmark for Southern Europe and the entire Mediterranean in fintech if it maintains three vectors:
- Continue building fintech infrastructure for the financial sector and corporations (with the development of integrated finance or embedded finance, open banking solutions via APIs, or anti-fraud and digital identity solutions, among others).
- Develop AI projects and companies that apply to risk, efficiency, and personalization within the financial sector, and projects around digital assets (tokenization and crypto service providers, to give two examples).
- A solid alliance between financial companies, institutions, and hubs like the Cluster and knowledge centers like the BFS, which help translate trends into real market competencies.
