The information and communication technologies (ICT) sector employs 125,900 people in Catalonia, a figure that represents 3.7% of the employed Catalan population, according to data from the active population survey for the first quarter of 2021. The ICT sector has emerged as a job generator in recent years, a fact that places it as one of the areas of activity with the best economic and social prospects.
Despite this, the latest Barometer of the technological sector, presented by CTecno, warns about the need and urgency to increase the participation of women in the ICT sector. Thus, female talent continues to be a pending issue in technical positions, with only 8.60%.
The Government is committed to empowering women in the digital world through the DonaTIC Plan, a strategic plan promoted by the Department of the Vice-Presidency and of Digital Policies and Territory with the priority objective of increasing female presence in the technological sector.
The DonaTIC Plan consists of 4 lines of action:
Axis 1. Making ICT attractive for future female talent
Axis 2. Making technological women and content created by women visible
Axis 3. Training and digitally empowering everyone
Axis 4. Promoting full and effective participation of ICT women in decision-making and entrepreneurship
Eighty candidacies are competing today for the DonaTIC 2021 Awards, which will be granted in eight categories grouped into three areas: professional; academic and revelation, and dissemination and reference initiatives. The DonaTIC Awards have the dual objective of recognizing the fundamental role of women in the professional, business, and academic world of new technologies, and offering role models to girls and adolescents who are hesitant about whether or not to dedicate themselves to STEAM disciplines (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) in the future.
