The Barcelona City Council launched the Bonus Consum initiative in mid-October to encourage local commerce through discount vouchers that can be used to shop in establishments in the city. The vouchers, which can be downloaded through the BCN Market platform, have a value of 20 euros: the user who acquires them pays 10 and the council puts up the rest. A few weeks later, the 280,000 Bonus Consum that were made available to Barcelona residents have already run out.
Given the good reception the initiative has received, the council has decided to re-issue it, launching 100,000 more vouchers. They can be downloaded starting Monday, December 20, and must be used before the end of the year. The Bonus Consum can be used to acquire products and services, as well as to consume in bars and restaurants, and only one voucher can be used per purchase.
Currently, there are more than 1,700 establishments that have joined this initiative and can be consulted on BCN Market. In this list, there is a bit of everything: bakeries, restaurants, greengrocers, pharmacies, bookstores, stationery stores, dry cleaners, florists, perfumeries, beauty centers, clothing and accessories stores, shoe stores, appliance stores, household product stores... Chains such as Cal Fruitós, Culinarium, Kimod, Boboli, Luxpiel, Casas, Fnac, Abacus, Re-Read, Intersport, Miró, Calbet, La Mallorquina or San Remo also participate. The districts with the most available offer are Eixample, Sant Martí and Sants-Montjuïc.
The council will allocate one million euros to expand the program and the total investment figure will stand at 4.04 million euros. This will mean a direct injection of 3.8 million euros by the administration into Barcelona's commercial fabric. The initiative is promoted together with Barcelona Comerç, Barcelona Oberta, Comertia, Pimec, Foment del Treball, the Gremi de Restauració, the Agrupament de Botiguers i Comerciants de Catalunya, and the Gremi d'Hoteles.
