After the reopening of the Hivernacle and the Centre Martorell and the announcement of the rehabilitation of the Umbracle de la Ciutadella, it's the turn of the Castell dels Tres Dragons: the unique building that welcomes visitors to the park from Paseo Lluís Companys is moving forward with its modernization.
The property not only has a start date for works to begin renovating its facade in autumn, but the City Council has put out to tender the drafting of the project for its interior renovation.
The building, which houses one of the headquarters of the Barcelona Museum of Natural Sciences, will be transformed with the renovation into a dynamic space, open to the public and designed to bring scientific culture closer to its visitors. The interior renovation will begin in the second half of 2027, when the facades will already be ready: the works to rehabilitate the exterior will begin in November, and are expected to finish in February.
With the interior renovation, the castle will return to its origins and will once again host a cafeteria-restaurant. But not only that: it will also house rooms for exhibitions and educational uses, an auditorium and a large library specialized in sciences, which will be added to the future Ciutadella del Coneixement.
And the fact is that the building, like the Hivernacle, the Umbracle and the Martorell, is part of the heritage axis of this project, which will turn the Ciutadella into a leading scientific, innovation, research and dissemination hub in Europe.
The building, inaugurated in 1888 as a café-restaurant shortly after the Universal Exhibition, is listed, which is why the renovation project must be respectful of the elements to be preserved, which must be rehabilitated and conserved to maintain the essence and aesthetics of the emblematic urban castle.
