The BSC expands its 'spin-off' portfolio with Galtea

The supercomputer spin-off wants to bring generative AI to industry in a secure way

The practical applications of Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) technologies continue to expand. The scientific infrastructure has created a new spin-off, Galtea, focused on offering companies the necessary tools to make safe and responsible use of generative artificial intelligence (AI), capable of automatically learning to generate unique content in various formats such as text, image, or music.

The company, founded by BSC researchers Jorge Palomar and Baybars Kulebi, will facilitate the integration of this emerging technology into industrial processes, which is expected to reduce costs and improve productivity, taking into account all existing European regulations. Although it is estimated that AI could add more than 77 billion euros to European GDP by 2030, many companies are reluctant to incorporate it due to the lack of precision and security of its models.

The core of Galtea's product has been developed at the BSC by the Language Technologies unit, made up of a team of 50 professionals specialized in AI and natural language processing. BSC technology has now been transferred to Galtea, where it will be refined for commercial applications. "Right now it is very easy to develop an AI product, but, on the other hand, it is extremely difficult to guarantee that it works as intended. Our solution is indispensable to close that gap," defends Galtea co-founder Baybars Kulebi. Currently, the company is working with a Spanish bank and an AI startup, without specifying names. It expects to have its platform ready by May 2025.

Galtea has become the thirteenth spin-off created by the BSC. Since 2016, the companies launched by the supercomputer have generated more than 220 jobs and have raised more than 30 million euros. The BSC holds minority stakes in all its spin-off companies, which always have their registered office in Barcelona, and has licensed more than 30 technologies so that they can exploit them in the market.

Recently, it launched Talptech, focused on improving crop performance and sustainability. The list is completed by Elem, Mitiga Solutions, Openchip, Quilimanjaro, Energy Aware Solutions, Nearby Computing, QBeast, Frontwave Imaging, Nextmol, Maspa Technologies, and Nostrum Biodiscovery.
