BARCELONA AND GASTRONOMY, NOW IN ONE PLACE

Tapas with history: the Raval revives gastronomic memory in four days

From July 10 to 13, the Raval Tapas Route invites you to rediscover the most authentic heartbeat of one of Barcelona's most charismatic neighborhoods. For 5 euros, in 20 bars and restaurants born from kitchens full of tradition, you can savor reinterpretations that pay homage to the cuisine of memory: recipes passed down from mothers and grandmothers, local products, and a contemporary look that speaks to us of identity, stories, and culinary miscegenation.

If the Raval could speak, it would do so through its bars. Through its small kitchens, its worn bars, its tapas full of accent, those establishments that keep memory alive. And that is precisely what the new edition of the Raval Tapas Route proposes. From July 10 to 13, this "gastronomic excuse" returns on the occasion of the neighborhood's Festa Major, a pretext to rediscover cosmopolitan and unique places. An appointment with the flavor, history, and authenticity of one of Barcelona's most vibrant neighborhoods.

At Bar La Ravala, homemade (XXL) croquette with a small beer.

For just five euros, in each of the 20 participating establishments, you can enjoy a special tapa and a drink. Here, classics and reinterpretations coexist in harmony, with recipes that speak of tradition, memory, and creativity. In addition, l'Eix Comercial del Raval is once again launching the tapas passport, with which you can vote for the best tapa of the Route and win a dinner for two people at the winning establishment.

Classic tapas with neighborhood soul

On this occasion, given that this year Catalonia is the World Region of Gastronomy, and to highlight Catalan cuisine, this new edition of the Route wants to pay a sincere tribute to thecuisine with roots that does not forget tradition, but looks forward. A cuisine that pays tribute to the recipes of mothers and grandmothers, and that is based on a rich pantry with products from the sea and the land. Of course, always with a creative and cosmopolitan outlook, faithful to the spirit of Raval.

For this reason, this year, many establishments have wanted to highlight traditional Catalan cuisine based on local products, reinterpreted with their own style.

We start with the essentials: the bravas with allioli and brava sauce from the iconic Bar Mendizábal (C/Junta de Comerç, 2), which can be savored both at its popular bar and on its always lively terrace.

Just a few steps away, at Casa Leopoldo (C/Sant Rafael, 24), the typical Barceloneta bomba transforms into a very personal version: oxtail bomba with chipotle mayonnaise, pure Raval character.

La Bomba de Casa Leopldo, a tribute to the most "Barcelonian" tapa.

And there is no classic worth it without paying homage to the Bar Marsella (C/Sant Pau, 65), the oldest in Barcelona, where these days you can accompany an absinthe or a beer with a delicious coca de recapte with escalivada and anchovies.

From homemade cuisine to fusion

The route also embraces the most homemade cuisine at the Bar Resolís (C/Riera Baixa, 22), which offers tasty tuna-stuffed eggs. At La Prudencia del Raval (C/Abat Safont, 11), the star is an updated Russian salad "paloma", faithful to tradition but with a contemporary look.

The Russian salad "En Paloma", from La Prudencia.

Fusion appears strongly in places like the gastrobar 78/33 (C/Ferlandina, 29), which presents an original Gilda with red tuna, romesco, sun-dried tomato, and stuffed olive.

Bars with history and flavors from the south

At Bar Roso (C/Sant Gil, 2), known to all as El Toro (because of that large bull's head that presides over the wall of the establishment), the tapa also speaks of migrant history: a toast with apple ajoblanco and Cádiz chicharrón that evokes the flavors of Andalusia in the heart of the Raval.

At Na Mindona, chicken tapa in orange and rosemary escabeche.

The restaurant Na Mindona (C/Riereta, 8) proposes an elegant and Mediterranean tapa: chicken in orange and rosemary escabeche, while La Taverna d'en Rubén (C/d'En Robador, 33) opts for simplicity with a delicious meat, onion, and tomato skewer with country bread and allioli.

Creativity, sea, and craft beer

A proposal for hop lovers could not be missing: at Cervesa Sant Jordi – Tabarlot (C/Sant Pau, 4) the tapa is a tasty "Mos de Drac" of pulled pork with pickles, accompanied, of course, by a good craft beer.

The spectacular mussels from La Monroe.

And if we talk about the sea, let it be with capital letters. Magraner Boig (C/d'En Robador, 22) presents a delicious octopus with broad beans and caramelized onion. For its part, Bar Atlanta (Rambla del Raval, 13) remains faithful to its essence with Anna's mussels, a simple and seafaring recipe.

More sophisticated is the journey of La Monroe (Pl. de Salvador Seguí, 1-9), which takes us from Barceloneta to Latin America with its "ceviche" of mussels with mango and toasted corn.

The most cosmopolitan Raval

Barcelona's most mixed neighborhood also asserts itself with tapas that cross borders. At Bianco Noir (C/Riera Alta, 8), the spotlight is on a duet of samosas (vegetable and meat) with green and sweet and sour sauce.

At Las Fernández, mole meatball with huitlacoche, tender corn, and crispy avocado.

Bar Costa reinvents the classic stew with its beef tataki with Arabic spices and crispy potato. And Fat Cat Raval (Pl. de Salvador Seguí, 13) presents a tapa that has it all: beef cheek patacón with avocado, mango, pickled onion, lime, and homemade gochujang.

At Chula Vista (Pl. Emili Vendrell, 1), the accent is purely Mexican with a shiitake and onion taco, while Las Fernández (C/Carretas, 11) sign a surprising mole meatball with huitlacoche, tender corn, and crispy avocado.

To savor the authentic Raval

In short, the Raval Tapas Route is not just an excuse for tapas. It is a way to rediscover the neighborhood, its most authentic places, its people, its history. To be surprised by tapas that speak many languages, but above all speak of the Raval.
