Sleeping among a sea of vineyards, a good plan for this autumn

02 october of 2020 at 00:36h

The Spanish saying goes: "In September the grape harvester cuts the bunches two by two." The months of September and October are one of the most beautiful times of the year to visit vineyards. These are weeks when towns fill with life and grape harvesters reunite with friends and colleagues whom wine has brought together harvest after harvest. The excitement is palpable in the air, as is the stress among winemakers and enologists; it's non-stop. But once the harvest is over, there's also room for a well-deserved celebration.

To experience this daily life of wine landscapes up close and in person, it's a good idea to visit a winery where, in addition to being able to taste must in full fermentation or learn more about the winemaking process, it's also possible to stay overnight. We have selected six Catalan wineries to enjoy a unique experience: sleeping among vineyards and oak barrels. Have a good trip!

1. CLOS FIGUERAS - GRATALLOPS VILLAGE, PRIORAT REGION

Christopher Cannan fell in love with a vineyard in Gratallops that René Barbier had shown him. In October 1997, after quick negotiations, Clos Figueras was born ("Clos," the prefix of most new Priorat wines, and "Figueras" in honor of the two magnificent fig trees on the property). The winery produces about 30,000 bottles, made with passion and commitment. Currently, Anne Cannan, one of the great women of wine, is in charge of its production, seeking to reflect the highest possible quality in each vintage.

Since March 2015, Clos Figueras has three spacious and comfortable bed&breakfast type rooms, from which you can enjoy splendid views of the Priorat mountains. To differentiate the rooms, each has been named after one of the winery's wines. During their stay, guests will enjoy rural tourism, visits to the surroundings, and a good lunch at the winery's restaurant, where dishes with organic ingredients can be tasted, a true pleasure for the most demanding gourmet. Can you imagine waking up there and feeling like Jack Nicholson in the movie "Blood and Wine"?

5. MASTINELL CAVA & BOUTIQUE HOTEL BY OLIVIA HOTELS COLLECTION - ALT PENEDÈS

Penedés is the only wine tourism destination in the world with great added value: the Castellers. Four values unite them with the world of wine: strength, balance, values, and sanity. This region is the origin of wine and vineyards in Catalonia. Just 30 minutes from Barcelona, lies the Iberian site Font de la Canya. At 230 meters above sea level, flanked by two torrents, near the towns of Avinyó Nou, San Sebastià dels Gorgs, and Clariana, archaeologists have found hundreds of carbonized and mineralized seeds that show that from the 7th century BC (625-600 BC) until today, the role of this settlement was to cultivate vines and make wine. That said, Mastinell is one of the most luxurious and spectacular places to sleep among vineyards. Opened in 2013, the building is environmentally friendly and simulates cava bottles in rhyme: a tribute to Antonio Gaudí. Do you want to enjoy water sports or go horseback riding? Go play golf at sunset? You can do all this at this 19-room establishment, which in 2014 won the award for Best Wine Tourism Hotel in Catalonia. In the establishment's gastronomic space, you can also taste the wines of Heretat Mastinell, a small cava founded in 1989.
