Helena Tornero premieres 'Tu em vas prometre una història d’amor' at Sala Beckett, a play that introduces us to a writer in her room, surrounded by fictional beings who will be the protagonists of her story (and even, of family ghosts).

The author tries to write a love story, but, nowadays, how can one talk about love without falling into toxic romantic tropes, without anyone feeling excluded (or excluded)? A difficult task, very difficult. But she tries and the result is a hilarious, original comedy, full of rhythm and glitter.

Tu em vas prometre una història d’amor  or the drama of a writer trying to talk about love

The premise is brilliant: the writer finds herself "alone" at her desk with the intention of starting to define the love story she has promised to write. Well, she's not entirely alone, because, like all writers, she is surrounded by fictional characters who appear and disappear from the room.

Hand in hand with these inseparable friends, the author tries to define what a love story can be today that doesn't fall into clichés, that doesn't defend toxic love, and that is inclusive. She begins by imagining the city of Rome, romantic, ancient, full of beauty; but quickly we fall into the cliché of the traditional "lover" who harasses his victim until she finally gives in, more out of persistence than out of real love. Then, obviously, we go to Paris, the city of love, but sexual libertinism and lack of respect appear from the very first moment.

In the end, the author decides to set her story in Poland, a city that normally doesn't fall into romantic clichés and that, precisely for this reason, the writer chooses as a narrative space. And, from this initial decision, she will try to write a story between two characters that is a current, real, contemporary love, but without losing the beauty and magic of this feeling. It seems difficult, but she succeeds!

Brilliant interpretations, full of rhythm and comedy

Ester Cort, Fermí Delfa, Sandra Pujol Torguet, Roger Torns and Teresa Vallicrosa are the protagonists of this funny comedy. They all do an impressive job, and help us travel with them through these confines that separate reality from fiction.

Above all, I highlight the three actresses: Ester Cort, Sandra Pujol and Teresa Vallicrosa, because I found that they have a brutal stage presence, comedic timing, and energy. They own the stage and hypnotize us with their sensitivity and energy.

Even though, on opening day, there were some technical problems in the Poblenou neighborhood, the truth is that the magic of theater returned in the blink of an eye. After almost 20 minutes of forced pause, the actors and actresses entered the stage (in a second attempt!) and managed to gain momentum again and let us travel with them to the karaoke on the periphery of the world. Brilliant.

A staging that, apparently, is simple, ends up becoming a proposal that makes us travel from fantasy to reality (excellent resource of the armchairs on stage), which opens the doors of a karaoke full of glitter and invites us to live a kind of intense music video throughout Barcelona.

In addition, the use of the live camera gives a very cinematic touch to the most intense scenes and manages to enhance the importance of the moment, the feelings of the characters, the raw emotions.

In short, Tu em vas prometre una història d’amor seemed like an absolute blast to me. It made me laugh, it moved me, and it made me see that theater continues to be that space where fiction and reality shake hands. And, what an ending... WHAT AN ENDING! :)
