With 1,350 wineries and 90 designations of origin, the Catalan capital becomes for three days the international epicenter of the wine sector

Every glass of wine is a map. In each sip, one can trace the orography of the vineyards where it was produced and the patience of the farmers and producers who harvested and crafted it. At Barcelona Wine Week, this landscape and territory unfolds on a large scale, with more than 1,350 wineries and 90 designations of origin gathering at Fira de Barcelona, transforming the Catalan capital for three days into the epicenter of Spanish wine, with the forecast of exceeding 26,000 visitors, 20% of whom are international.

Until February 4, the more than 10,900 meters of pavilions 1 and 8 of Fira Montjuïc are transformed into a living map, full of aromas and flavors, representative of the richness of Catalan and Spanish wines. A variety represented by more than 1,350 wineries from all over the country, a figure that already represents one out of every three Spanish wineries and marks a 5% growth compared to the previous edition of the event. These data consolidate the event as "the great international gathering of Spanish wine," according to the president of Barcelona Wine Week (BWW), Javier Pagés.

Among the represented producers, highlights range from large family sagas to small emerging producers, with names such as Marqués de Griñón, Grandes Pagos de España, Abadía Retuerta, Vallformosa, and wineries participating for the first time in the fair with a direct exhibitor, such as Grupo Osborne.

These wineries represent 90 designations of origin from all over the country: from Ribera del Duero to Rueda, passing through Jumilla or La Mancha, without forgetting Catalan labels such as Priorat or Montsant. With more than 320 wineries present, Catalonia is the region with the largest presence at the great fair of the wine sector, followed by Castilla y León, La Rioja, and Castilla-La Mancha.

But beyond the aromas and the intensity of the wine's notes —from flowers to wood or leather—, Barcelona Wine Week becomes a meeting and reflection space for the sector, with conferences and master tastings led by 136 national and international experts. Because Barcelona Wine Week is not only an exhibition space, but also a place for debate and connection among all agents in the sector to jointly rethink how to face present and future challenges.

Especially in a changing global market, marked by trade tensions and tariffs, which forces the sector to explore opportunities in new markets such as Indonesia or Mercosur countries (Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay). A scenario that also poses the challenge of introducing new agricultural practices and moving towards more ecological and sustainable models, while highlighting the need to connect with new audiences, who prefer lighter, fresher, and lower-alcohol wines.

Far from pessimism, Barcelona Wine Week projects a future for a key sector for the Catalan economy. With twelve designations of origin, wine is a characteristic element, but also strategic for the Catalan territory: with more than 1,384 companies, nearly 10,000 workers, and an annual turnover of 3,267 million euros, 1.2% of Catalonia's GDP, according to the latest figures from Acció and the INNOVI Cluster. An economic weight that is also exported: in 2023, for example, exports of Catalan wines and cavas reached 615 million euros.

It is in this context that the event consolidates itself as a strategic business platform. This year's edition, the most international to date, brings together nearly 900 international buyers from strategic markets in Europe, America, and Asia, who expect to hold up to 13,500 business meetings. Among the attendees are large distributors such as Divin (Canada), Delta Wines (Netherlands), Global Wines & Spirits (Colombia), and Imperial Beverage (United States). In an event that, sip by sip and glass by glass, projects the wine-growing territory, while also shaping the future of this strategic sector.
