When Sónar arrives, Barcelona fills with a very special energy. The streets are flooded with people of all nationalities, headphones become the accessory par excellence of the city, and the air has that electric, energizing essence. And this 2026 has been no different. From early morning, the essence of Sónar began to be felt in the Llotja del Mar with Sónar+D, a festival that hosted debates, presentations, and shows that explored the future of digital music. But, from five in the afternoon, Fira de Gran Vía began to call all its public. And they responded in spades.
The streets adjacent to the Fira filled with people of all ages, nationalities, and unforgettable looks: leopard suits, neon colors, wide sneakers, and, of course, their inseparable sunglasses. Because Sónar has that: it is a festival that brings together very different people, but who share the same passion for beats, the bass drum, and the rhythm that shakes your body. Welcome to the inaugural day of Sónar 2026.
Sónar+D welcomes us to the festival
The welcome to the Gran Vía venue could not have been more impactful. Sónar+D presented its ORGANYSMO by LedPulse installation, an architectural sculpture 30 by 30 meters that floated in space. You could walk under its more than 700 meters of LED "neurons" and live an almost hypnotic experience: light became a constantly evolving material, moving to the rhythm of a spatial sound system.
Dancing under the afternoon sun
With the sun still high in the sky, Arp Frique & The Perpetual Singers took the stage. The multi-instrumentalist from Amsterdam and his band filled the space with gospel and funk full of rhythm and energy. This band opts for classic analog synthesizers and the seventies groove, so we lived an experience full of optimism that was perfect to kick off the first hours of dancing.
But the Catalan talent was very present in this edition of Sónar and we could see it in person thanks to the show by Lleida-born Mercè Segura, MERCÈ. The artist, only 20 years old, presented her debut album RISC with the show SHOW SIMULATOR, a proposal that featured her 3D avatar and an aesthetic typical of the video game world. All of this merges in real time with her voice, violin, and electronic processing created by herself. MERCÈ is, without a doubt, one of the most promising artists of her generation, we will keep an eye on her!
The duo Mina & Bryte also injected a dose of energy onto the Village dance floor. The connection between the London producer and the Ghanaian MC is a real earthquake: they fuse the bass of UK funky and dancehall with the rhythms of afro house and gqom. In addition, there was a moment when Mina took to the decks to dedicate a few minutes of her darkest, most rhythmic, and electrifying electronic music to us—it was impossible not to jump on the grass! The performance of this pair of artists set the Fira floor on fire and set the bar very high for the rest of the night.
SonarCar was an improvised techno laboratory
One of the highlights of the inauguration was the start of STOOR Live, the project led by Speedy J that this year has taken over SonarCar. The concept is impressive: five hours of totally improvised electronic music, without a script or rehearsals. And the most original thing is that the artists are placed in the center of the room, surrounded by the audience, in a 360º view. Colin Benders, Reeko, .VRIL and Nadia Struiwigh were, along with Speedy J, the DJs who created an immersive, dark, and unrepeatable atmosphere.
A lineup with great icons and the most underground essence
The Sónar 2026 lineup has opted to offer us an almost millimeter-perfect balance. The festival has not lost its formula: attracting the general public with headliners who are international references in electronic music and contemporary pop, while maintaining its commitment to risk and the exploration of new subcultures.
The great success of this edition has been seeing how large-format performances with high visual production on the main stages coexist with musical proposals such as digitized post-punk and new clubbing trends. Because Sónar still wants to define the direction of what we will listen to tomorrow. Edition after edition, we see that on its stages and in its creative laboratories, the festival aims to be the place where the city thinks about itself and projects itself into the future.
One more year, Sónar has once again shown that club culture and electronic music continue to set the pace of the city. A festival that acts as a showcase for new trends in digital music and that, above all, serves to unite people from all over the world and all ages who want to celebrate life to the rhythm of the DJ.
