When not even walls can imprison art

Art has the capacity to cross walls, survive its creator’s physical imprisonment, and keep a voice alive even when freedom disappears. A song, a poem, or an image can become a form of survival and resistance. It is this power of art that runs through the work of Palestinian artists Basel Abbas and Ruanne Abou-Rahme, who are presenting their first exhibition in Spain at MACBA.

The exhibition Prisoners of Love. Until the Sun of Freedom explores precisely these forms of resistance. It stems from research into the experience of imprisoned Palestinians and the ways in which, even between walls, song and poetry can become forms of resistance and freedom. At the center of the exhibition is an immersive audiovisual installation created specifically for MACBA, giving shape to these voices and to stories of violence, resistance, and survival through images, sounds, texts, and found materials.
