More than 160 Catalan social entities have received the equivalent of nearly 52,000 shopping carts in Mercadona products during 2024. This is because the chain's supermarkets in Catalonia have donated 3,100 tons throughout the year, during which it has intensified cooperation with charities and organizations and opened new collaborations.
The 166 Catalan social entities with which the company collaborates daily include the food banks of Barcelona, Tarragona, Girona, and Lleida, and their collaborating entities, as well as the Red Cross, Cáritas, the Banc de Productes no Alimentaris La Nau, and soup kitchens.
Of the total products donated, 2,300 tons have been distributed among entities in the Barcelona regions, where the company collaborates with 112 organizations. For its part, 342 tons have been delivered to the 23 entities it works with in the Tarragona regions, while 316 have been distributed among the 21 in Girona, and 150 tons, among ten entities in Lleida.
These figures are part of a 2024 during which Mercadona donated a total of 25,200 tons of essential products to 847 entities in Spain and Portugal: "This is equivalent to more than 420,000 shopping carts," emphasized the company's Director of Social Action, Laura Cruz.
In addition to the donation of basic products, Mercadona also participates in collection campaigns, such as the Gran Recapte, in November. Through the event, organized by the Spanish Federation of Food Banks, the company launched a campaign for monetary donations at checkout, which translated into 3.8 million euros in food.
