The Danish multinational Maersk has launched a logistics center of 8,168 square meters in the Logistics Activities Zone (ZAL) of the Port of Barcelona, with a maximum management capacity of 18,000 containers per year. This infrastructure will require a total staff of 80 people, in three shifts, when the tonnage is at one hundred percent, according to the firm's representatives.

The logistics and maritime transport company has established its first distribution center for southern Europe in the new facilities that CILSA (Intermodal Logistics Center) has built, turnkey, with an investment of five million euros. The Danish shipping company, which operates in 300 ports and 130 countries and leads global container traffic, had until now operated from various terminals in the ports of Barcelona, Valencia, and Algeciras.

The new operation, which has been launched on schedule, will improve and expand the services that Maersk provides to global clients to manage intermodal traffic, guaranteeing flexibility and optimization of transport costs. The logistics platform of the Port of Barcelona will allow the consolidation and deconsolidation of goods, thus offering door-to-door service for clients.

The Barcelona center, with a useful clear height of 11 meters in the storage area and 39 loading and unloading docks for containers, trailers, vans, and air cargo, features innovative technology for logistics activity. "Technology is a key point for the shipping company in the global supply chain; it is increasingly focused on the flow and visibility of information behind the movement of goods," states Diego Perdones, CEO of Maersk for Southwest Europe and the Maghreb.

For his part, Toni Sánchez, manager of the new logistics center, explains that the infrastructure reflects a clear commitment of the company to sustainability. In this regard, he mentions the installation of solar panels to supply itself with 100% green energy, the placement of electric vehicle chargers, the home automation system for constant air renewal in the building and to efficiently control the lighting and air conditioning of the center. "With the aim of minimizing the carbon footprint", he specifies, which is why it has, among others, the LEED certificate with Gold category.

Maersk's platform, which will serve its clients in the Iberian Peninsula and southern France, is part of the new construction projects that CILSA is developing in the ZAL Port and which will form part of a logistics park of more than 920,000 square meters of built warehouses.
